Music News of November 4, 2011

Chello all AFGM readers and daily newcomers to the blog.  Hopefully you all are not working for the weekend:

If you are, then make sure to check out some of the music videos and tunes posted on AFGM over the last week.  Anyways, here's what's been making [AFGM] headlines:

First off, its a bummer but it has be said.  Its a little damper on my day that Gwar will press on with one less member:

"It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their long time guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus.  Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of Gwar are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred." -David Brockie (aka Oderus Urungus)

Regardless, the Gwar camp has decided to push on and continue the tour and play their Edmonton show as planned.  You can read the full article here.

Down is reportedly back in the studio and frontman Phil is starting to lay down vocal tracks for the albums.

"We're going to do four EPs, and they'll all be different. We have many elements to our sound, so each one will have its own characteristics. Like, for example, this one we're writing right now and are about to start recording will be really hard, with heavy Down stuff. Then we'll have a mellow one, then a doom one — you know, slower and doomy stuff. A little bit of everything." -Kirk Windstein (guitars)

Why the band chose to release four EPs instead of a full album?

Kirk said, "The record industry sucks so bad. Nobody buys anything. We're trying to do something different, making it cheaper to buy. People want stuff for free! So six songs, it's cheaper to buy. Same thing for downloading; it will be cheaper to download. Nobody wants to go to the record store and buy stuff anymore. So we're just trying to mix it up and do something different. It will be released on physical EP and digitally as well." -Kirk Windstein (guitars)

Aerosmith lead vocalist Steven Tyler has reportedly been injecting some of his own cash into the developmen of a gell that simulates real vocal chords in the human body.  Yes, I am confused as much as you all are as well.  Here is an idea of how the gel is to work on someone with damaged or overused chords:

"Doctors inject it directly into the vocal cord area, where it bonds with the existing membrane. Once in place, it responds to breath and muscle tension by vibrating at up to 200 times a second, just like a real vocal cord. The scientists rearranged the molecules in the gel — a type of polyethylene glycol, a compound sometimes found in skin creams — to get it to vibrate at the right speed." -Theweek.com

Unfortunately for country fans, Keith Urban has been forced to cancel almost all upcoming performances in preparation for a throat operation.

The country musician has developed a polyp on his vocal chords. His publicist confirmed in a press release Thursday that Keith will get the growth surgically removed in late November.

Although the procedure has been reffered to as minor, Keith is under strict orders for complete vocal rest following the operation. After that has ended, the musician will have to refrain from performing for an unknown amount of time.
