Using Social Media To Its Advantage

Social media is here to stay...or is it?  So just assuming that you all reading this have (in some form) an account with any or all of the major social media outlets.  I'm talking Facebook, MySpace, Google, Twitter, etc.

Some of you log onto your account(s) everyday for a glimpse at what others are up to, gossip, news, and anything else that will satisfy your needs and wants to social interaction.  But how many of you are using social media to your advantage?  How many of you use social media for entrepreneurship?  I see quite a few of my friends and family setting up shop online for their chance to pursue a life at music, photography, fashion, online discount services and anything else you can think of to make $.

I use AFGM as an example.  Since starting up this blog/social hub in 2011, I can honestly say I have NEVER SPENT A SINGLE CENT on this project.  I never had some big idea behind it or even a concept.  I had two reasons to start this project up and use social media to it's advantage.

1. I just got sick of the constant amount of trolling and negative influence on my favourite sites.

2. I had people on a constant basis asking me about their favourite band's next show/album/appearance.

I wanted something where people could talk about new bands they see, new shows coming to town and veer away from gossip, negative attitudes and be cool with WHATEVER level of engagement they have towards music.  So moving on, I was sifting through my daily news and video when I came across a Scion A/V featuring Metal Blade Records.  In the video, bands and label management discuss the relevancy of social media, how it plays a role in exposure and how it effectively increases interest and activity to that said band.

"You HAVE to connect with those people because... well, that's your audience."

Well said by a few of the people in the video.  Its a great and easy way to make yourself heard, get noticed or possibly even signed.  Many people in the past did not have to rely on American Idol/Got Talent or others to jump start their career (that's another rant in itself), they did it with their own knowledge and dedication AND had somewhere for fans and newcomers to find out about them.  Websites cost money and show no extra gain in readers, but social media is FREE!

This wasn't a piece to convince you that social media the ONLY way to do business, but it helps.  With the ever growing population permanently online, the room for physical media just seems to be slipping.  Nothing we have done directly to halt it, it's just technology.  Did we uproar when cassette replaced vinyl?  When CD replaced cassette?  The online world has just opened the market from a few hundred bands to now a few thousand (and counting).  Everyone wants to be a rockstar, but who will be the fans to buy your material?

Music News and New Music For April 29th, 2013

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. Bravewords, AV Club, Music News, MissInfo, Billboard, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. They are relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am somewhat patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Rolling Stones rock surprise show at small L.A. club ahead of tour:

"Welcome to Echo Park, a neighbourhood that's always coming up — and I'm glad you're here to welcome an up-and-coming band." -Jagger

iTunes' 10th Anniversary: How Steve Jobs Turned the Industry Upside Down:

"The attraction of Napster was not just that it was free, but more importantly, it gave people a way to connect with pretty much any piece of music.  What Steve was doing with iTunes was to replicate that type of experience – a vast catalog, available on a singles basis, with a convenient interface. It had to be easier than Napster." -Paul Vidich (a vice president of Warner Music Group)

Michael Bublé Sings in NYC Subway:

"This was a dream come true for me. Once you've sung in the subway waiting for the No. 1 train, you know you've made it.

I feel like a real New Yorker now.  Singing in the New York subway is something that's been done for years and years and years and I feel like it's the most authentic, organic way to make music." -Buble

Concert Review: Trent Reznor turns wife Mariqueen Maandig into a star at How To Destroy Angels’ Canadian debut:

"By the time they got to Welcome oblivion, though, the night belong to Maandig, and rightfully so. Reznor is meticulous in his efforts to make his shows look and sound like something you won’t forget, and this HTDA show is designed to elevate Maandig from singer to star. When the chorus of the remixed version of The Space in Between hits, she is exactly that — Reznor drifts into the smokey background and Maandig is the only thing worth looking at and listening to."

Beastie Boys Writing a Memoir:

After Yauch died, I didn’t push them, but I think that Adam and Mike ended up realizing that it was the right time for them.” -Mr. Janklow (of Janklow & Nesbit)

Atoms for Peace Release New Song 'Magic Beanz':

DEEP PURPLE - “Blitzkrieg”:

"They felt, I guess, that ‘All The Time In The World’ would get play on the softer stations, the Radio 2s of the world, or... I don’t know; I don’t know what their plan was. They’re a great company and they really believe in this record and I can’t remember... I thought to myself, how did they come to that decision? And I can only think that they had a meeting of all the staff and said, ‘Right, what are your feelings?’ I have no idea. I thought at first, you know, that’s not a good thing to put out. But then I thought, it’s certainly going to make the album much more of a blitzkrieg when it does come out." -Roger Glover

Buying Facebook Likes: A Thing Bands Are Doing To Get Ahead. But Will It Backfire?:

"So what can you do? Simple; hover over the "like" button on whatever band pages you like and click on "show in news feed." If it's still giving you trouble, like more of their posts so Facebook will be more apt to put it in your feed. It seems like such an easy solution, and it really is."

HYPOCRISY Forced To Cancel North American Tour:

“As we were getting ready to go get our visas stamped and ready for the tour we were informed that the earliest we could go initially was sometime in July.  We then immediately continued to call them, got the label to help with some letters, and put our lawyer to work etc. The best that got us was an appointment in late June. This is a HUGE blow to us, to our fans and everyone who has supported HYPOCRISY in North America. Sometimes there are battles you can’t win, and this is one of them. We will be back, I can promise that!” -Peter Tägtgren

MERCENARY Reveal New Album Artwork, Tracklisting, Release Date:

“Last year when we were busy with preproductions, we considered reaching out to Mircea to ask if he'd like to give our new cover a shot, because we liked his recent stuff and wanted to try someone with a fresh approach. Against all odds, however, he actually beat us to it and contacted us first with the exact same offer, so it very much seemed as a collaboration that was meant to be.

After a few sketches, we quickly locked on to the main motive of the cover below, which we felt was both iconic, mysterious and not least, oddly disturbing. Most importantly perhaps, we also felt that Mircea's artwork had managed in a natural way to combine something fresh with the style of our older album covers and their dark and atmospheric vibes.

As our new album is very much a combination our latest material with a lot of the more traditional melodic and melancholic elements of previous Mercenary albums, we felt that this was a perfect visual expression of Mercenary's sound and identity in 2013.

The cover symbolizes a darkness that we have gone through as a band, which we feel that we have finally been able to put behind us. The title of the album is meant very positively and thematizes both the journey through existential darkness as a general theme and the ability to break through it. The lyrical universe is very much about making the most of life and not getting caught up in negativity.”

Kickstarter Campaign Launched For Sepultura Documentary:

"Finally: The long awaited documentary about SEPULTURA’s incredible journey from Brazil to the world. Filmmaker Otavio Juliano has been following SEPULTURA for the better part of 2010-2013, a time of tension and triumph for the band, as they toured and recorded their album Kairos. Nothing has been off-limits. This amazing story will go through SEPULTURA’s history, myths, conflicts, personnel changes and struggles with the Internet economy in the early 2000s as well interviews and rare footage. This documentary is certain to bring fans closer to the band they love."

We ain’t fighting the power no more – we are definitely killing it!!" -Benji Webbe

Overpriced Tickets... Go Big or Go Home

So ticket prices are always going to be a hot topic and issue for fans of any outing; sports, concerts, plays, musicals, etc.  The past two decades has seem the greatest surge in rising ticket prices than ever before.  Mind you, touring concerts haven't been around since the dawn of man, but we have also seen this in other forms of tickets like sports and plays.  Both have been dazzling onlookers for centuries, so why all of a sudden do we have to decide to A) pay the mortgage or B) buy a pair of tickets for that event you have been eagerly waiting.

"At first, we only spent $350. Then, the next time, we spent $450.  "This year, it was like $650 and I was like 'I'm done ... I'm not spending any more'." - Cara Corbett (16-year-old Bieber fan)

An article from the CBC brought forth some testimonies and some interesting comments to follow.  What's the excuse for paying out the nose for ticket prices.  Now if we decided to ask ticket mogul such as Ticketmaster why the sale prices have increased...

"[In the past, there were no] massive video screens and production elements.  Whereas you look at today: [they're] massive, massive live entertainment spectacles, really." -Patti-Anne Tarlton (Ticketmaster Canada executive)

OK, so at least we got a statement from the company explaining why the prices have skyrocketed.  But what about the service fees that have continually increased over the years?  Well, TM has once again broken down some of these service fees, which include:

Service Charge – This is Ticketmaster's charge for the general service they provide and maintain. The amount paid may depend upon the method of payment (by phone, online, or in person).

Building Facility Charge – This is determined by the venue, and not Ticketmaster.

Processing Charge – This is Ticketmaster's charge for processing your order and making the tickets available to you. This is usually not a per ticket charge, but rather a per order charge.

Shipping Charge, E-Ticket Convenience Charge, Will Call Charge – Ticketmaster charges a fee for ticket delivery, whether the tickets are mailed to the customer, printed out at home, or collected from the venue. The charge for printing out the ticket at home is often higher than the fee to have the ticket physically mailed to you. In other sectors, such as airline ticketing, companies usually do not charge (and in some cases even offer a discount), for electronic ticketing.

That didn't stop a class action lawsuit from being filed over Ticketmaster's redirection to their sister site (and extremely over priced) TicketsNow...

"The lawsuit was initiated by a plaintiff who attempted to purchase tickets for Toby Keith's October 8, 2008 performance at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta on the first day the tickets went on sale. The Plaintiff made several attempts over two days purchase the tickets through Ticketmaster Canada's website. After that time, the Plaintiff managed to access the Ticketmaster Canada website, but she was automatically redirected to TicketsNow's website. She purchased one ticket, and was charged a total of $219.15, including $29.95 for "delivery" and $25.80 "service charge". The face price of the ticket was not disclosed to her before she completed the transaction. When she received the ticket, she realized that the face price was $79.95, resulting in an overcharge of $139.20. Later that month, she attempted to locate another ticket for Toby Keith's performance on Ticketmaster Canada's website. To the Plaintiff's surprise, she was able to locate a ticket for the same performance. She purchased the ticket for $97.11, including $0.26 "facility charge", $11.00 "convenience charge", $1.35 for "TicketFast delivery" and $4.35 "order processing fee". The face price of the ticket was $79.75." -Canada News Wire

I know this seems like a Ticketmaster focus hate article.  I however do not see any other companies based out of North America who run a monopoly in tickets such as this one.  If there are others out there, then feel free to drop a line and share some horror stories.

So are you satisfied with Ticketmaster's response to increasing ticket prices?  A few people who are frequent readers of CBC had some choice words to rebuttal against their (almost arrogant) reasoning.

"As someone who's been attending concert for over 40 years, I can honestly say that's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard.

Let's all be open and honest and simply accept the fact it's all about greed which is now ubiquitous in our society." -BigOilsTheEnemy (CBC commentor)

or this one...

"2 years ago AC/DC had a world tour with a massive stage 2 large video screens on stage and several around the arena's.  They set a limit for ticket prices at 90.00 for every seat in the arena's.

Their tour was the second largest grossing tour for that year. They were second only to Madonna who was charging 400.00 for some tickets.  Therefore they can make money with lower prices, this is more the promoters being greedy." -DougPW (CBC commentor)

So I think in final we have to ask ourselves what is the limit where we say "no", even if it means missing your favourite team, band, and/or performance?  Do you have any past problems with over priced ticket events?

Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix cover Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive"

Now I don't necessarily like to put my effort and energy into musicians that were discovered by reality and competition shows.  As far as I can remember, the only notable artist (in my opinion) that has emerged from the slew of music competition shows is Kelly Clarkson.  No real reason why.  I think that I just enjoyed her voice and album "Breakaway".  After that, I found that they (broadcast companies) were trying to push the same formula again, and again, and again.  Enter Pentatonix into the mix.  A five piece a cappella group that partnered up with emerging violinist Lindsey Stirling to create this wonderful rendition of Imagine Dragons' hit single "Radioactive".  Pentatonix got their claim to fame by competing in season 3 of NBC's "The Sing-Off" against 15 other groups.  Why is it when I hear a cappella now that it instantly throws me back to The Office's Andy Bernard? haha

Anyways, here's the clip:

Check out my previous article covering Lindsey Stirling.  A great artist in the making.

Is Chris Motionless the new Marilyn Manson?

Now that I have your attention. haha

I was cruising home from work last night with a new set of tunes on my album.  As much as I enjoy all the new music coming out, we all have those select albums we cannot get enough of.  In this circumstance, that album was Motionless In White's "Infamous" album that was released on November 13th, 2012 via Fearless Records.  Agreed by many that this is MIW's best work to date, I can completely understand that the band wanted to veer their metalcore style of music to a more diverse and well rounded effort.

"Condescension, Suffering, Callousness and Loathing
Are the badges I have earned for my cause
And I am finding hope within hatred
A reason to persist, to push past everything" ("Devil's Night" lyrics)

Previous releases of MIW have been swept to the side as the band did nothing essentially to break themselves out of a genre that is overflowing with both talent and repetitive chugs.  Not that we all didn't enjoy hit such as "Abigail" and "Immaculate Misconception", but in an ever changing music industry and the fact that we have information by the truckloads, fans and critics are looking for something that is a definite game changer.  Never lose your core sound, but at the same time you need to expand your horizons or else progression will cease to exist.

"Not since the heyday of Marilyn Manson had such a strongly image-driven band with a message beyond simple positivity in the light of hard times struck a chord with America’s youth, and in the twenty-five months since release week that following has only grown." -Under The Gun

I can attest to this claim, as I was in attendance of their SOLD OUT show in Toronto at The MOD Club.  The group had the crowd by the short hairs almost as soon as they hit the stage, with chants of "Mo-tion-less" being screamed without a moment of silence. Side thought, hands down the best venue they could have chosen for their show...the sound was immaculate and not a misconception.  All puns intended.

"Oil prices are so high we can't feed ourselves
So we buy into to fast food and occupy the will
We upload our status and beg for attention
While their all eating cake up on capitol hill" ("A-M-E-R-I-C-A" lyrics)

So how does this relate to Manson in particular?  Nothing factual or on paper I can show other than reviews and comparisons from other websites.  We got the image, the outfits, the sound and the growing fan base  The vocal range exceed that of a modern Manson of course.  I have to remind myself at the same time that Manson has been in this game for 20+ years longer than Chris Motionless has, so there is going to be some room for improvement (especially after the last few times I have seen Manson live...but that's a different rant).  But for all intensive purposes, I am looking at sophomore albums between the two...and they rival.

"Infamous lead single 'Devil’s Night' rages like Bleeding Through, while 'A-M-E-R-I-C-A' stomps like vintage Manson." -Revolver Magazine

"Sinematic" was a track that instantly caught my attention when comparing Infamous to the likes of "Antichrist Superstar".  Both exceptional albums and both really started to show the world what these artists are communicating/portraying.  The low end spoken voice of Chris reminds me of yesteryear.  Something along the lines of Mansons' "Man That You Fear".  Take a listen for yourselves.

“Infamous pays a lot more attention to real life, this time. It’s not about movie characters like a lot of Creatures was. I don’t want to make music to just exist.  I want to make music that makes a fucking difference. So this record is straight up, non-fiction and reflects how I feel about things being sung through not only my eyes, but those of fans and people in general. As much as I love not taking music entirely seriously all the time, I do feel at this point, we have an obligation to remain a band that’s doing something positive and putting out the right kind of message. You have NO idea what you are about to hear, in the best way possible.” -Chris Motionless

Now I don't expect everyone to agree with me.  Hell, I expect some of you to say "WTF are you thinking?!"  There's nothing wrong with having a difference of opinion, as long as it's backed.  Chris Motionless connects to his distraught (and sometimes confused, fearful, and/or angry) fans both lyrically and emotionally, same as Manson has done for years upon years.  He makes himself stand out amongst the crowd and doesn't care what you think about his makeup, outfits or lyrics.  Remind you of someone?

I'm sure I will have more thoughts on this that I might add over the next day or so, but for now I think I've made (somewhat of) a point.

If you don't like the album and were expecting "Creatures Part II"...then at least we can blame Tim Sköld (producer of "Infamous", former bassist for Manson, also producing, editing, creating artwork, electronics, programming drums and beats, playing guitar, keyboards, accordion and synthesizer bass for Manson's album "The Golden Age of Grotesque").  haha.

I'm still writing from the same place I was writing from before, I'm still the same guy... for better or for worse. We're still the same band, with the addition of a killer new guitarist, Dennis Kimak, who joined us after the departure of our original guitarist Johnny." -Rob Traynor

I am not stressed at all this time, even though I am producing the album on my own again. I have been lucky to gather around a group of musicians who are willing to work with me, so everything is going smoothly." -Turunen

SHINING Release Video For Cover Of KING CRIMSON's '21st Century Schizoid Man':

"In light of our upcoming show at Rockefeller this Friday, we wanted to post one of my favorite live clips filmed at that very venue in November 2010. I do love the original version of King Crimson’s '21st Century Schizoid Man', but I also love it when twisting classics around gives them a brand new face. I feel this is the best version we have done of the song until now. But we’ll try to surpass it this Friday! If you can’t come to our show in Oslo, Norway, this Friday, then check out the newly uploaded live clip. If you are in fact coming to our show, then check out the clip anyhow! It’s a pounding ending to one of the greatest concerts we ever played.” -Jørgen Munkeby

System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian To Release Albums From Orca And Jazz-Iz Christ Side Projects This Summer:

“Recorded in Linz, Austria in October of 2012, Orca was composed and demoed in Tankian‘s home studio and fully realized after a successful Kickstarter campaign that helped fund a recording and debut performance at the regal Brucknerhaus with the “Das Karussell Ensemble“. With conductor Werner Steinmetz at the helm, the four acts of Orca mix influences from early 20th century composers with modern film compositional dynamics showing influences ranging from Ennio Morricone to Philip Glass. Listeners are met with a mingling of sounds and intertwining pieces that are both serene and bombastic at the same time, offering a fresh interpretation to the classical art.

Jazz-iz Christ is Serj‘s brainchild, but truly is a collaborative effort between many musicians that Tankian curated to be part of the group and self-titled album. Among others, there are considerable contributions from renowned pianist Tigran Hamasyan, flautist Valeri Tolstov, and trumpet player Tom Duprey. Additional performances from Stewart Copeland and actor/musician Davis Alpay and Vincent Pedulla make for a very unique collaboration. The 15 tracks that comprise Jazz-iz Christ, a mostly instrumental effort except for 4 tracks, are an amalgam of progressive jazz, electronic, ethnic and even rock elements, displaying a unique presentation of the genre itself.” -Serj

Music News and New Music For April 24th, 2013

Cheers!

But that's not what fucking Black Flag is about, man." -Mike Vallely (band manager)

Attack Attack! Call It Quits:

“Well everyone, it’s been a wild ride for Attack Attack, but I think it’s about time Whiting and I take some time to write this note.  We want to start by thanking every single one of you that has ever come out to a show, bought a shirt, gotten in a fight over crabcore, or spent the time to send us notes online. We have been insanely blessed to be able to do what we have done with AA and we think it’s time that we wrap up this chapter in our lives.  Yes, this means exactly what you think it means. The Back in Action Tour will be Attack Attack‘s final and most ironic tour.  After 6 long years of playing in garages, VFW halls, clubs, open air festivals, and everything in-between. We’ve decided it is time to lay AA down for good.

You are all beautiful, wonderful people, and we want you to know that we deeply appreciate everything you have done for us.  We are sad to lay Attack Attack to rest, but are very excited for what is next in this new chapter of our lives.  Stay Tuned!!!

Much love,
The Andrews”

Music Releases For April 23rd, 2013

As much as I like to get some good ol metal for a Tuesday release, I am quite happy and relieved to see the multi genre albums hitting shelves.  From Buble to Frank Turner.  Alanis to Steve Martin.  There are some real gems here folks and should be catching your attention.  I have to admit that Snoop Lion was the off one for me (with holding my rant about "Frequency Unknown") where I was skeptical of the work now that he has been 'reborn' so to speak.  Thank goodness my brother has been a longtime fan of Snoop, sent me a text the other day to give it a spin.  He assured me that it was worth the listen, regardless of the sensationalized guest voices of Drake, Akon or Miley Cyrus.  I have to admit that a few songs fell flat for me, but I do appreciate the reggae vibe that he is portraying.  After all, it's Snoop!

Now back to my rant about Geoff Tate and "Frequency Unknown".  I will give Tate the benefit of the doubt that he has made some amazing albums in the past and inspired many musicians you now hear today on the radio, but what's with the subtle "FU" and the continual back and forth over who has the legal rights to Queensryche?  If it was anyone but Tate, I wouldn't have even listened to the album.  But giving credit where credit's due, I decided to spin it.  I'll let you make up your minds over it.

Some other great albums that shouldn't be ignored are Frank Turner's "Tape Deck Heart" and Steve Martin's "Love Has Come For You".  Both artists I discovered over the years and continually look forward to their releases.  Frank Turner did such an amazing job playing solo while on tour with The Offspring (my first time seeing him) that it was an instant 'like' on Facebook and pick up a few albums.  I just hope he comes back to Toronto soon.  As for Steve Martin...it's Steve Martin!  haha

In all seriousness, his work on "The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo" and "Rare Bird Alert" were a fresh new take on banjo music and collaborated with some great artists such as Dolly Parton, The Dixie Chicks, Vince Gill and Paul McCartney.  At least worth the preview with all those names popping up.

So in closing, we just had a very successful Record Store Day on Saturday across the world so show some love and pick up an album or two.  Cheers!

Buble is at his best when reclaiming beloved classics as his own. Frank Sinatra's "Come Dance With Me" becomes playful and electric in his interpretation. Some songs, like the unexpected duet with Reese Witherspoon on "Something Stupid," are wild cards that can bring down the house.

Yet it's Buble's love for middle 20th-century music that keeps this album in the middle of the road: As an artist, Buble needs to become his own man. -Ottawa Citizen

In spite of some massive hiccups, Snoop’s effortless charisma and innately relaxed delivery — along with Diplo’s chops as a master curator of Caribbean styles — allow Reincarnated to rise above the novelty factor that initially seemed primed to doom the album. The real question: is Snoop Dogg’s transformation into Snoop Lion here to stay? It’s hard to see him sticking to reggae for more than a couple albums, but for the time being, he’s enjoying the hell out of his time in the islands. -Idolator

While Morissette may have gotten famous for her "angry woman" songs, "Guardian" from her newest release is a jangly pop anthem showing she is not all piss and vinegar. The crowd is into the performance throughout the show and it is mixed so you can hear them. This is especially evident on "Ironic," as they take the vocals for the entire first verse.

After more than two decades in music and nearly as long as an international star, Morissette shows herself to be an artist still willing to take chances and stretch out her music, especially in a live setting. Fans of Morissette will not be disappointed by Alanis Morissette - Live At Montreux 2012. -Blinded By Sound

Lyrically, the album is just as detailed. Where England Keep My Bones featured multiple songs focused on his homeland, Tape Deck Heart is very much an inward-looking record. Turner wrestles with memories of the ones that got away, realizes with terror how fast time slips away as he grows older, struggles with admitting he’s fallen out of love, and berates himself for screwing up a relationship. Yet his clever wit pops up from time to time, adding some much-needed levity. “Good & Gone” curses both Hollywood and Mötley Crüe for the ways each distorts love’s reality, while “Oh Brother” jokes about the “old flyers, lame tattoos, the in-jokes and memories” that bond band members who are going their separate ways—a group that formed many years before because one member knew “the chords to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’” Tape Deck Heart might be a far cry from Turner’s strident acoustic punk roots, but his brutally honest self-reflection and unflinching romantic analysis elevate the record into something just as meaningful. -AV Club

Although it isn't the revelation or surprising, extraordinary achievement that his 2010 record Praise & Blame was, Spirit in the Room is another solid, very welcome set of stripped-back interpretations from Tom Jones, produced once again by Ethan Johns, making those comparisons to Johnny Cash's late-period recordings with Rick Rubin all the more fitting. Know that the songbook has changed from classic (spirituals, blues, and traditional numbers) to more contemporary (Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Paul McCartney, the Low Anthem, and others) and that Jones and Johns are both in top form and you've got the picture, along with that same frustration that no matter how fun "What's New Pussycat?" and "Sex Bomb" were, a couple more albums like this along the way would have been rich and rewarding. Jones joins the ranks of singers who have really "felt" Cohen's words in "Tower of Song," here in one of its most naked of performances, but as the dark carnival of Tom Waits' "Bad as Me" gives way to a frail, delicate, and lonely Richard Thompson song, it's obvious this one doesn't have that last one's purposeful layout, at least not until the fourth quarter. Exiting with the off-kilter and brittle "All Blues Hail Mary" (Joe Henry) and the spiritual/secular strangeness that's "Charlie Darwin" (Low Anthem) makes for a compelling suite, and while Spirit in the Room matches its predecessor on a track-by-track level, it's only in those last moments that the whole package seems as thematically sound and well designed. -All Music

Did Steve Martin rock his signature arrow-through-the-head prop at these bluegrass-y sessions? Hard to tell; except for unfussy harmonies, he expresses himself only via his stately, joyous banjo-plunking. The star is Edie Brickell, the hippie-pop one-hit wonder (and Mrs. Paul Simon), whose sassy vocals feel down-home but all her own. The songs tap folk tradition without getting stuck in it; they’re full of struggling lovers, an ’84 Ford, a baby in a suitcase and some memorable melodies. With help from guitar legend Waddy Wachtel and others, these two make a dandy duo. Hey, Mumford & Sons: Need an opening act? -Rolling Stone

I thoroughly enjoyed the remaining tracks of the album.  Both "Behold, The Pretty Filthy Creatures" and "White Trash Freaks" bring me back to my "Sinister Urge" days.  One with a great fast paced beat throughout the entire track and the other a sluggish anthem style song that both resemble vibes of "Dead Girl Supertar/Never Gonna Stop".  An instant win in my books.

Then we have THE COVER.  It's almost an expectant in this day and age for a band/artist to cover artists they grew up on and influenced them.  I think Zombie would do the best job explaining the reason behind covering Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band". -AFGM

AFGM: Slaves on Dope - Live at Dundas Square

(No reviews...yet)

In this re-release of the Flesh And Blood recordings, titled The Flesh And Blood Sessions, Pilson revisits the songs and brought in some additional content such as the bonus track "Heaven Knows". The former Dokken bassist also wrote the liner notes for this collection, and in them he walks you through the history of the band. All in all War & Peace wasn't groundbreaking, but the music has a lot of heart and soul to it. It's a shame that the prejudice against these musicians didn't allow this band to blossom. Tracks like "Kill For The Love Of God" and "Nailed To The Cross" showcased just how cutting edge War & Peace was musically and lyrically. If you're a no-frills hard rock or contemporary metal fan you'll appreciate what The Flesh And Blood Sessions has to offer. -Sleaze Roxx

An 11th-hour remix provoked by fan complaints of the album’s prerelease samples show its audio quality has improved. But nothing could have saved the hits Tate re-recorded from Queensrÿche’s commercial peak: “Empire,” “Silent Lucidity,” “Jet City Woman” and “I Don’t Believe in Love.” Here, those engineering masterpieces are sonic embarrassments, and Tate hurts his own singing legacy by submitting vocal tracks full of cracked notes and congestion. Despite his resolve to flip off the haters, the only person he screws with "F.U." is himself. -Billboard

Rita MacNeil honoured in private Cape Breton ceremony:

Q&A: Dave Grohl Reflects on Inducting Rush Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:

What was it like to actually play with Rush?

It's terrifying to play your favorite band's song in front of your favorite band. It's one thing to sit in the basement and woodshed 2112, and its another to stand in front of Rush in a fucking kimono and a wig and try to use a wah-wah pedal in your platform shoes. It was amazing. Tonight was one of the most special nights of my life.

The mere mention of Toronto made them go nuts.

They didn't even say the name and the place went fucking crazy. That says it all. Honestly what's most important is that you survive 45 years of your life playing music. Surely its not the trophy or the plaque, but the fact that Rush finally were . . . I feel like their fans felt liberated. It was pretty awesome tonight to see Jann say, "And from Toronto," and the fans just went, "F**K YEAHHH." Everyone at the tables were just like, Jesus! It was amazing. That's what it's all about.

Peter Oundjian will continue to serve as conductor at the TSO’s 2016-17 season:

“The continuing success of the TSO is enormously important to me.  I am delighted to have hired 30 new musicians during my tenure and thrilled to see how the Orchestra is valued by the community. The TSO is an exceptional Orchestra and I look forward to the coming years, during which I have a great desire to take the Orchestra beyond Toronto to major cities of the world and continue building the strength of the Orchestra by increasing our endowment. I will also continue my philosophy of fostering relationships with guest conductors, soloists, and composers; many of whom have significant and long-term relationships with the TSO and bring fresh perspectives to our musicians.”

Two Door Cinema Club Leave the Nest:

"We're all switching phases after the summer 'cause for the most part, in between touring, we lived together. It made the most sense creatively to come back and be able to work together, but it's also a very unhealthy environment as well.  We're gonna spend some time settling in our own places, having a new base to work from. . . [It] feels like we're sort of gaining independence in a way. For six, nearly seven years we've been a band and we're gonna be individuals doing our own things in our own homes; it's a privilege that we just haven't been able to enjoy." -Alex Trimble

Live Review: YES @ Massey Hall, Toronto | April 10:

Finally as the album came to its end, so too did the band as they subtly walked off stage, giving the crowd a minute-and-a-half heart attack in hopes for an encore. Re-emerging, the audience heard Howe speak for the second time as he began to introduce his fellow band mates. Each generated more and more applause until it was Howe’s turn to be recognized, and Squire took the honor. As he did the crowd erupted with applause for the legendary guitar genius.

Queens Of The Stone Age Tease New Track, Discuss Elton John Collaboration:

“He was in a car listening to Them Crooked Vultures and his assistant said: you need to hear Queens. The guy driving the car was an old room-mate of mine! So all of a sudden I get a phone call at my house on a Sunday. I picked up and he said: [does the voice] ‘Hello Josh, this is Elton’. I thought someone was messing with me.

He said, ‘The only thing missing from your band is an actual queen!’ I said, Honey, you have no idea.
When he walked in, he said, do you have a ballad for me or what? I said no. We tracked lived for three hours, playing a rock and roll song. We just had a blast, he became part of our band. What really dawned on me what a music lover, what a workaholic he is.

The session had gotten really dark. When he left, we were on cloud nine. We got fired into the abyss of doing something we really loved again.”

The Beatles used to teach students:
