Music News and New Music For October 21st, 2013

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am somewhat patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Neil Young to Be Honoured by Recording Academy for Audio Achievements:

"The efforts of the P&E Wing continue to raise awareness about the importance of sound quality and the preservation and integrity of recorded music.  This year, it is with great honour that we pay tribute to a musical icon who has been tireless in his own efforts to draw attention to the importance of hearing music as the artists who created it intended, and who has continually set precedents of excellence within the music community. The contributions of Neil Young are innumerable, as is his incomparable body of work, and we look forward to an unforgettable evening with this legendary artist." -Neil Portnow (Recording Academy)

What Is the Greatest Music Video of the 1990s?:

"Now we have a question for you: What is the single greatest video of the 1990s? Vote for whatever you want, from "November Rain" to "Jeremy" to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to "All the Small Things" to "…Baby One More Time." Any video is fair game as long as it hit the airwaves between January 1st, 1990 and December 31st, 1999. Just please only vote once and only for a single video."

Linkin Park Streaming “Recharged” Remix Of “Lies Greed Misery”:

"Recharged" will be released on October 29th, 2013 via Warner Bros. Records.

Robert Plant Discovers Unreleased Led Zeppelin Music:

"I found some quarter-inch spools recently.  I had a meeting with Jimmy [Page] and we baked 'em up and listened to 'em. And there's some very, very interesting bits and pieces that probably will turn up on these things." -Plant

MTV for the spoilt generation: P Diddy is launching a music channel for the prized 'millennial' audience:

"Young people are unplugging and running to the internet. But that's because there just isn't anything engaging on TV, the best of rock, the best of EDM, the best of hip-hop. We may play some country music if it's funky enough … If you like good music, you finally have a home." -Combs

'Batman: Arkham Origins' Score Is Dark and Powerful:

Rolling Stone: Technically speaking, how is the music integrated into the game?

Chris Drake: Most of it is in cinematics, and that's traditional scoring like I would do in a movie. But then there's the actual in-game music, and that's really fascinating. Let's say Batman is walking into Blackgate. . . the music is done in layers. One layer is the moody layer of walking in to the prison, but then Batman is being stealthy, so there's another layer that gets activated – what we call a tactical layer – and that might sound like synth pulse to give it some excitement. Then, if you're in a fight, there's a third fight layer that gets added. The fourth layer is an all-out combat layer with drums and orchestra. Every layer can all be subtracted or added.

Rolling Stone: Do you get to see the gameplay before starting the score?

Chris Drake: I'm based in Burbank and the game team is in Montreal. We have a computer program where I watch a video in real time over the phone with the director and we have a conversation. Is this a scary scene? A dramatic scene? For the in-game, that gets interesting, because music is all about the timing – I know a scene is two minutes. The music needs to address that time. But with the gameplay, a guy who sucks could take an hour. Someone else could blast through it in 15 minutes. So you don't want the music to be tedious. It has to be Batman music it has to be exciting.

A new headset that plays music and tracks your health:

"The iRiver's On audio headset contains a sensor module placed in the right-hand-side earbud to gather data. It uses infrared light and an accelerometer to analyse blood flow and physical activity."

Stone Roses' 'Made of Stone' Documentary Gets North American Theatrical Run and DVD/Blu-ray Release:

"I know what it's like to miss out on a Stone Roses gig and I know that a lot of the North American fans have been waiting to view this film since the summer, so I'm just glad we can finally share the film with them all.  Throughout filming, my love for the music has just grown and grown and to be party to watching something grow is a real privilege. What I saw in those first rehearsals blew my mind, and yet when I returned a month later it was even better." -Shane Meadows

"Made of Stone" arrives on DVD and Blu-ray in the U.S. December 3rd, 2013.

Twitter likely to kill its music app:

"The scrapping of Twitter #Music, when it occurs, marks a clear misstep in the company’s online music strategy, which has lacked direction over the past year. The app was atypically developed in isolation inside the company. It was a sort of a skunkworks project led by former Twitter business development leader Kevin Thau, and built by the team behind “We Are Hunted,” a company Twitter acquired to work on music products. Twitter #Music, according to people familiar with its development, was never fully integrated with the overall product team as it was being built."

Orgy On Crowdfunding Campaign:

"The fact that a few haters are posting such childish remarks makes you wonder what created this kind of attitude. (it doesn't take much imagination to figure out who is wasting so much time trying to spread hateful messages.) Simple answer is jealousy and stupidity. The band is very grateful for any and all contributions made on Indiegogo. They didn't fail they asked for what would help them do a strong radio and marketing campaign. The record is coming along great and sounds awesome. Hey childish haters get ready because the new music will speak for itself no doubt."

Glass Cloud Streaming New EP “Perfect War Forever”:

“Perfect War Forever” will be released on October 22nd, 2013 via Equal Vision Records.

Ice-T on Going Straight:

RS: Your past is still very much a part of your music.

Ice-T: I'm normal. I just had a different occupation for a while, and when you're in a different occupation, you have to carry yourself a different way. Most of my art is me bringing you stories from that era of my life. My life now is kind of boring. [Laughs] So it's different.

RS: Do you ever regret the life that success brings?

Ice-T: No. I'm so happy I'm not in that life. It's a different way you have to operate. My friends in here can say anything and do anything, but I can't. I'm not bitchin' about it. You have to embrace your evolution. You have to be "I'm the best that I can ever be at this age, at this time in my life." If you're like a Paris Hilton, you're not as paranoid as me, because you're really unaware of how diabolic[al] these people are. I'm from the other side. I rolled with the diabolics.

Dethklok’s (‘Metalocalypse’) New Track “Blazing Star”:

“This is a full blown musical — metal combined with symphonic passages, classic musical theatre, high stakes drama, emotional moments, and yes totally ridiculous comedy. I drew from all of my influences to make this the most unique project I could dream of. This is easily the best thing we’ve ever done with the show and the music. I can’t wait for you to hear it.” -Brendan Small

The new album from Dethklok will hit stores on October 29th, 2013.

Corey Taylor On New Slipknot Album: “It’ll Be A Cross Between Iowa And Vol. 3 In A Lot Of Ways”:

AD: What’s next for you?

CT: Honestly, Slipknot is looming on the horizon. That’s what’s next in my mind anyway. I’m writing some demos. Clown is putting some things together. Joey is doing Scar The Martyr, but he’s a fucking machine. He can write at any time. This band is just loaded with writers. We don’t have a definitive start date, which is fine. That’s okay for us now. When we’re ready to make the album, we will. That’s the mindset. Next year we’re going to get together and start putting the pieces together.

AD: What do you think of now, when someone brings up Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses?

CT: That album is a bit of a peek at what I think the next album will be. It’ll be a cross between Iowa and Vol. 3 in a lot of ways, while also evolving the way we always have. The stuff I’m writing right now is really dark. The stuff Clown is coming with is fucking beyond. It’s really cool. It’s going to be cool to get the alchemists in the same room and see what happens.

JOHN 5 Shows You How To Play 'Theme For The Rat Vendor:

Project Featuring MAX CAVALERA, GREG PUCIATO, TROY SANDERS Gets Name:

KILLER BE KILLED!

"Greg approached me kinda like how Alex [Newport; FUDGE TUNNEL] approached me to do NAILBOMB in that he was really, really trying to get me to do this project. I told him already I was pretty busy doing SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY [and] I was not really looking for an extra thing, but he was pretty insistent and then I just gave up and was, like, 'Let's fucking do this!'

"It started with just me and Greg and then we got Dave Elitch — he's an amazing drummer — and then Greg knew Troy and we asked him to be the bassist so it kind of became a supergroup all of a sudden. We jammed a couple of times and the last jam we did it sounded killer; the songs are really powerful real heavy. It's hard to describe but I think the coolest thing about this project is that all three of us are going to sing on every song." -Max Cavalera

Monster Magnet performs on the Artie Lang Show:

"'Last Patrol' is a return to our roots in terms of vibe and recording style. It's full-on psychedelic space-rock with a '60s garage feel, recorded almost exclusively with vintage guitars, amps and effects in our hometown of Red Bank, New Jersey. The songs are a kind of space-noir, tales of cosmic revenge, peaking libidos, alienation and epic strangeness. It's a weird trip through the back alleys of a dark, retro-future, which not by coincidence very much resembles my own life. [laughs] The lyrics aren't fantasy really, rather a recounting of my musings on, observations of and general emotional reaction to my life and environment during a one-week writing period in February of 2013. But I tend to use the vernacular and imagery of science fiction and surrealism to express myself and that's where these lyrics get trippy. There's also our cover version of DONOVAN's 'Three Kingfishers', which I thought fit the mood of the album." -Dave Wyndorf

Cooking to music - why chefs listen to heavy metal:

"It's a calming influence in a situation that can be extremely fraught and stressful.  It keeps spirits up and can help with the monotony of repetitive tasks. The tempo is important. In the afternoon, in the run-up to service, it needs to be upbeat to keep everyone going. We get told off by the hotel manager when we're playing Rage Against the Machine or System of a Down too loud!" - Nathan Outlaw

Living Sacrifice Premiere New Song “The Reaping”:

"Ghost Thief" will be released on November 11th, 2013 via Solid State Records.

Architects Sign to Epitaph, New Damage Records For New LP:

"We're delighted to announce that we have signed to Epitaph Records! Its an absolute honour to join a label that houses the best roster in the genre. We're also stoked to have signed deals with UNFD in Australia and New Damage Records in Canada. This is a whole new chapter for Architects and we're stoked to have such a great team behind us.

Many of you will have seen that we are currently in Gothenburg at Studio Fredman recording a brand new album that is penciled for a spring 2014 release. Its sounding splendid - ya gonna love it."

The album far exceeds our wildest expectations and we can't wait to take this music out on the road and share it with all of our friends and fans. Buckle your seat belts, we're all in for one hell of a ride!" -Rex Brown

Andy steps down as screamer in AMARANTHE:

"Time travels fast. There is so much in life to explore and time has come for me to move on and see what more is out there for me. We´ve been through a lot the last five years, had our ups and downs, travelling the world back and forth, playing arena shows, doing tons and tons of gigs, gotten gold records and all this in just two albums. Totally amazing, and I´m really glad and humble to have had the chance to experience all this. Now when I choose to move on I want to take the opportunity to thank the guys in the band for all the good times and all the memories. And of course all the fans out there. You are, and always will be, in my heart. Hope to see you guys out there again in a not to distant future." -Andy
