Music News and New Music For December 2nd, 2013

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am somewhat patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Queen Reworking More Newly Discovered Freddie Mercury Recordings:

"There's more in there than we thought, in the Queen source archive. We've found some Freddie vocals, some demos. If we find an analogue 24-track of Freddie singing something that never got finished, the first thing we do is transfer it into the digital domain.  I'm a little nervous of saying there's an album there, but there's certainly a few tracks." -May

Dave Grohl and Zac Brown Band Announce 'The Grohl Sessions Vol. 1':

"The band is so good they can be tracked live.  We didn't fuck with computers, we tracked live, four-part harmonies around one microphone. It's rocking. I didn't know what [the band] was [prior to this]. People are like, 'Oh, it's country.' 'No, it's not, it's like the Allman Brothers.' 'No, it's not, it's jam band.' I don't even know what you would call it, it's fucking great." -Grohl

The Grohl Sessions Vol. 1 will hit iTunes on December 10th, 2013.

Phil Collins considering a return to music?

"I have started thinking about doing new stuff.  [Maybe playing] some shows again, even with Genesis.  Everything is possible. We could tour in Australia and South America. We haven't been there yet" -Collins

Jack White's Third Man Records Enlists Vancouver Company to Design Custom Guitar Pedal:

"The product was designed by Vancouver company Union Tube & Transistor and is modelled after the one White used on his solo album cut "I'm Shakin'." It comes housed in a wooden box with a custom bandana. According to the label, the pedal helps guitarists 'crank out some stinging sounds.'"

Lostprophets Members Address Ian Watkins's Crimes in New Statement:

Earlier this week, we learned that the allegations of child sexual abuse against Ian were true, and that he would not be contesting them in court. Until then, we found them extremely difficult to believe and had hoped it was all a mistake. Sadly, the true extent of his appalling behaviour is now impossible to deny.

Many of you understandably want to know if we knew what Ian was doing. To be clear: We did not.

We knew that Ian was a difficult character. Our personal relationships with him had deteriorated in recent years to a point that working together was a constant, miserable challenge. But despite his battles with drugs, his egotistic behaviour, and the resulting fractures and frustrations within our band, we never imagined him capable of behaviour of the type he has now admitted.

We are heartbroken, angry, and disgusted at what has been revealed. This is something that will haunt us for the rest of our lives. Being in a band has always been a labour of love and a platform to inspire people, not to take advantage of them. It's still hard to believe this is happening and that someone we were once so close to has destroyed so many lives, lying every step of the way.

Our hearts go out to Ian's family, the fans and friends he betrayed, and most importantly, the victims of his crimes and others like them. We hope for justice, but also that Ian will truly take responsibility for what he's done. We would urge any other victims to contact the authorities.

Jamie, Lee, Luke, Mike and Stu

The album was produced by David Bendeth (Paramore, Hedley, Bring Me the Horizon) at House of Loud in Elmwood Park, NJ.  "Restoring Force" will be out on January 28 via Rise Records.

'Heaviest Metal' Band COMPRESSORHEAD Performs LED ZEPPELIN, RAMONES, HEART Classics In NYC:

LITA FORD And CHERIE CURRIE Reunite For Holiday Song 'Rock This Christmas Down':

"The song was written by Mitch Perry, my guitarist and Michael Dan Ehmig, my lyricist, along with Marty O'Brien on bass, and Rodger Carter on drums. We so rocked it!  What I didn't know is that I'd be singing it as a duet with my long-lost sister, Cherie Currie.  I am blessed to have her back in my life, and what an appropriate time and song to rehash an old friendship. Christmas!!!

Cherie hopped a plane from Chicago to L.A., and drove straight to the studio and threw down her vocal track on this rocking song! Needless to say, it was magic and history in the making.  We were left with such a smoking track for everyone to hear, every Christmas, every year!  Let's rock this Christmas down!" -Ford

"I have dreamed, literally, of seeing Lita again for over three decades," she said. "Even after all that time, I still thought of her often.  THE RUNAWAYS was something that was always left unfinished to me. Especially when it came to Lita, but I only knew her as a child.

What floored me more then the unbelievable gift of working with her again was the woman she had become. She is the bravest, kindest, strongest, most loving human being I have met.  Lita asking me to be a part of this amazing song and a part of her astonishing life has filled that void, that hole I had in my heart that maybe we both shared. It is now filled with love, support and admiration for a dear and wonderful friend whom I am so proud to say is Lita Ford.

'Rock This Christmas Down' has the flare of our RUNAWAYS legacy, but it's pure Lita. It rocks like only she can.  We took a dim, negative and unfinished past and turned it into a positive future. It doesn't get any better than that.  I know this will be the best Christmas I have had in decades. Thank you, sister!" -Cherie

BABYMETAL - Pro-Shot Footage Of 'Catch Me If You Can' Performance From SUMMER SONIC:

MASTODON's BILL KELLIHER: 'We've Got 21 Or 22 Songs That Are Candidates For The New Record':

"I'm in Death Valley [California] and Thanksgiving is in two days, I fly back to Atlanta on Friday [November 29] and on Saturday or Sunday we start tracking.

We've got 21 or 22 songs that are candidates for the new record, though obviously we can't use all of those. We'll have to strip a few off, though they can be used elsewhere.

I'm really not sure if there will be [a concept] or not. I know we had some ideas for a concept, but we've been so busy…" -Kelliher

IRON MAIDEN's Company Named One Of The Fastest Growing In U.K.:

"Iron Maiden's BitTorrent data suggests Brazil is a huge driver of fans – and given Brazil is one of the biggest file sharing nations on the planet, this is a strong indicator of popularity.

With their constant touring, [the] report suggests Maiden have been rather successful in turning free file-sharing into fee-paying fans. This is clear proof that taking a global approach to live touring can pay off, and that having the data to track where your fan bases lie will become ever more vital." -Greg Mead (CEO and co-founder of Musicmetric)

Bad Religion Launch Online Advent Calendar:

"Yes it's true, we recorded a Christmas album. To celebrate, we made this advent calendar where we’ll be giving away “presents” every day as we count down to Christmas. We're also donating 20% of all album proceeds to SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, so thank you to all who’ve purchased Christmas Songs and to everybody, Happy holidays!"

Former NIGHTWISH Singer ANETTE OLZON To Release Debut Solo Album 'Shine':

"I am so thrilled to finally release my first solo album.  I've been working on it for a long time by now...

The album is very personal with songs I have started writing already in 2009 but also very recent songs.

The overall message of the album is that life can be really dark and filled with hardship and sadness, but you can always choose to see some light coming through, to make you stronger and full of life — making you SHINE… no matter what.

In the end, it is a rock album. Well, a pop rock album, maybe, or would you call it pop metal?" -Olzon

"Shine" will be released on February 24th, 2014 via EarMUSIC.
