Google's Music Timeline

OK, this is something I was going to include in my daily music news feeds but thought this was way too cool of a visual to just simply have it included.  So from what I have read and experienced, it seems that Google has taken music (once again) to another level and decided to map out trends and popularity of music and its genres since the 1950s.  If you open the link and start to play around with the timeline, you can see when certain genres were hitting all time highs/lows and the introduction of newer genres such as metal, pop, alternative indie, and hip-hop/rap.

"The Music Timeline uses aggregated data from Google Play Music to show the changes in music genres over the decades. This visualization shows which albums from past eras are still in our music libraries today." -Google

To further that, each genre (when highlighted over) has a list of albums and artists that attributed to the boom/decline of that genre.  Not sure about when a particular album came out?  Then check it out quickly in the search bar at the top corner.  Now what makes this all relevant to Google and what makes them their cash on this?

"Dig deeper into the chart to highlight key artists in each genre and read their stories, and navigate to Google Play to hear their music. For example, by clicking on the Metal stripe, we can see the handoff from Classic Metal to Hair Metal to Alt Metal within the growth of the overall genre, as well as some of the most popular artists that composed each subgenre." -Google

So check it out yourself and find that artist you may not have remembered but may have created the drop that rippled into a new genre.  There is a lot that can be done with this innovation and the possibilities (in my head) as far as Google is concerned.  Let's hope they keep this innovation up and running.
