Music News and New Music For January 16th, 2015

So of course, when running your own blog it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth, CBC, National Post, AV Club, Google, Wired, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am rather patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humorous and we can always use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Spotify Reaches 15 Million Subscribers:

"We had an amazing 2014 at Spotify and owe it all to you, the music fans who listen, discover, share and celebrate music and artists with us every day of the year.

And before 2014 turned into 2015, we reached 15 million subscribers and 60 million active users!

So as we set off into the new year, we want to send a giant thank you to all of you. We can’t wait for the year in music ahead!"

Ecstasy turns up in water supply after music festival, study finds:

"According to a study published Wednesday in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, these events could be introducing dangerous drugs like ecstasy and ketamine into the water supply, leaving traces of them in rivers and soil."

Twitch Launches Music Library, Curated Tunes Broadcasters Can Use For Free:

"Today Twitch is launching Music Library, a curated collection of 500 songs that broadcasters can use in their streams for free. In a phone call, Twitch Chief Strategy Officer Colin Carrier told TechCrunch that after a few EDM artists and labels began experimenting with streaming their music on the service, they realized they could connect artists looking for exposure with broadcasters looking for music to use in their streams."

Punk music archive to preserve Washington DC music history:

"The library even had a punk show in the basement to launch the initiative, which includes collecting paraphernalia dating back to 1976.

It is an unusual combination of loud music and quiet book-stacks which musicians and historians say will help preserve an important part of the city's history."

Bjork Announces New Album 'Vulnicura':

Tupac Biopic to Begin Production in June:

"We want to be real and raw, about the things and the gangster life that he was involved in, growing up in the way that he grew up.  But we also want to honor the talent that he had because he really was, in my opinion for sure, one of the greatest talents that ever lived in music and hip-hop." -Randall Emmett

Scientists Just Discovered Why All Pop Music Sounds Exactly the Same:

"Human beings crave familiarity. Numerous psychological studies show that people choose songs they're familiar with over songs that more closely match their reported music tastes. Our somewhat manipulative music industry, which chooses familiar-sounding music and pushes it to listeners in massive quantities, knows well how to capitalize on those cravings. Genres standardize over time as a way to plug into this psychology. And then we hear the same songs, over and over again."

Tim McGraw Reveals Cities, Opening Acts on Shotgun Rider Tour 2015:

Kim Fowley, LA music legend, dies aged 75:

"In a career lasting nearly 60 years, Fowley worked with a roll call of rock legends, including Gene Vincent, Warren Zevon, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Leon Russell and Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. As late as last year he collaborated with Ariel Pink on Pink’s Pom Pom album."

"[Matthews] checks with what was played at each venue over the past five years, and also what's been played the past couple of nights and how far we are from these areas.  So, if you're playing somewhere that's only an hour away from where you played last night, you're gonna try and write a set that is very different from the one before. He's keeping tabs on all of the different elements." -Stefan Lessard

The film provides no-holds-barred access to Cobain's archives, home to his never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, personal archives and songbooks. Directed by Oscar(R) nominee Brett Morgen (HBO's "Crossfire Hurricane" and "The Kid Stays in the Picture") and executive produced by Cobain's daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, it features dozens of Nirvana songs and performances, as well as previously unheard Cobain originals."

A Music-Making App Designed to Help Teens Deal With Death:

“We wanted to make it possible for someone to say I’m not sure how I feel but I made this to try to understand.  We can’t design for dead people, but we can design for people who experience death through grief.” -Alex Rothera

Rush's Neil Peart In "Two Minds" About Touring:

“I’ve been doing this for 40 years – I know how to compartmentalise, and I can stand missing her, but I can’t stand her missing me and it’s painful and impossible to understand for her. How can a small child process that? And there’s the guilt that comes with that – you fell guilty about it, of course. I’m causing pain.” -Peart

Rush to Receive Humanitarian Award:

"Rush will soon be joining the likes of Neil Young, Sarah McLachlan and Simple Plan as recipients of the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award, sponsored by Bell Media and one of the special achievement honors associated with the Juno Awards. Since 2006, the award recognizes Canadians who have made charitable contributions to the country through their art and philanthropy."

Breaking into music careers a tough act:

"There are roughly 5,000 paying performance jobs with the nation's professional orchestras such as the RPO. And in any given year, there are maybe 150 job openings, Ricker said. 'If you play an instrument like tuba or harp, that opening comes up every 10 years'."

LIFE With Rock Stars . . . and Their Parents:

"Assigned to take portraits of the artists at home with their sweetly square folks, photographer John Olson traveled from the suburbs of London to Brooklyn to the Bay Area, capturing in his work the love that bridged any cultural and generational divides that existed between his subjects."

Wigl bot moves to music, teaches kids to program:

"I want to effectively alter the way kids approach learning.  Seeing a child's eyes light up when they realize that sound that they're making (via musical instrument) can control something is powerful. It's not something they're used to. That gets them curious as to what else is possible and (hopefully) will lead them down that rabbit hole." -Vivek Mano

Halestorm To Release 'Into The Wild Life' Album In April:

"This album is not a departure, it is an invitation to all things Halestorm. We didn't stray from who we are, there's just a lot more of who we are. If you dare, start with the outer most layer of the onion, our first single "Apocalyptic" which is the medium between where we left off on "The Strange Case Of.." and where "Into The Wild Life" begins.

Lyrically and musically, we explored everything that makes us tick. We set a standard for this record, and gave ourselves no choice other than to be unapologetically Halestorm in every way. In a time where everyone is freaked out about the state of music, rock n' roll, hit singles, sales....we decided to ignore all of that and make a true album.

My insider's advice: Close your eyes and listen to the album from start to finish. There are some surprises that await you inside that are well worth the journey. Enjoy!" -Hale

"I didn't want to scare you guys too much with the first single [laughs], so we decided to go with this one. But there's a lot on this record that… I don't know, you just kind of throw caution to the wind, and there's a certain freedom that comes with that. But then there's also this kind of, there's a nervousness. But, you know, bottom line is that we came out with a record that we're really proud of." -Hale

Ex-GUNS N' ROSES Drummer STEVEN ADLER To Unveil Rhythmic Fine Art Collection:
