Music News and New Music For March 6th, 2015

So of course, when running your own blog it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth, CBC, National Post, AV Club, Google, Wired, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am rather patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humorous and we can always use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Big Music Labels Want to Make Free Music Hard to Get, and Apple Says They’re Right:

"Label executives I talk to agree that free music provides valuable promotion for them, and they don’t want to turn it off entirely. Different labels — and different executives within the labels — seem to have different degrees of dissatisfaction with a free option.

Sony, for instance, is replacing its home-grown music service with Spotify, which will offer its free version to people who use the company’s PlayStation gaming consoles and other devices.

And Apple itself isn’t entirely against free music. Sources say the company intends to keep its free iTunes Radio service running, since it doesn’t think Web radio services compete with music sales."

The winter effect on music chills the bones with warmth:

“It’s definitely more dangerous and more intense to travel around a rough country like Canada in the winter.  But when the show finally happens, and you’ve got an audience clomping into the venue in huge parkas and Sorel boots, everyone’s looking for a place to put their coats, these bars feel even more full and the audience is just so ready. At a winter show, the audience really wants to be there.” -Casey Laforet

"What fused this record is, I feel like it's a weird turning point for the universe. I feel like so many people I know are getting divorced or having kids. There's so much change going on and I feel like, for me, that one chapter has ended. And if you're looking at a book, there's a hand flipping the page up and it's in between the chapter you just finished and the one that's getting ready to start. That's kind of the sound of this record, and my life, the sound of the page turning and not being sure what's coming next." -Jim James

The Royal Conservatory of Music goes online to connect with students:

“You get to a kind of another realm, an ennobling realm. A glorious kind of a realm that you can’t reach anywhere else. And it gives you the space for thought where you’re really contemplating. You can think about these issues – the nature of your life.  That’s exactly what happens to me.” -Peter Simon

"Towards the end of the Babel tour, we'd always play new songs during soundchecks, and none of them featured the banjo, or a kick-drum.  We didn't say: 'No acoustic instruments.' But I think all of us had this desire to shake it up. The songwriting hasn't changed drastically; it was led more by a desire to not do the same thing again. Plus, we fell back in love with drums! It's as simple as that." -Marcus Mumford

PRIEST'S HALFORD CALLS FAIRNESS IN STREAMING DEALS:

“The big ones like Spotify appreciate the position they’re in. They’ve got buckets of money. I think you’ve just got to be ‘fair’s fair’ here.  Without us, you don’t have a streaming company – that’s it, plain and simple.” -Halford

"I wanted to keep the music very electronic, very filmic and give it an almost sci-fi like quality.  Music is a necessity for me. I go into the studio at least five days a week, every week, so once I had the idea and the template, the process was quick and fun." -Martin

Bob Dylan Has Recorded Another Album of Frank Sinatra Songs:

"He came to my house eight or six months ago and spent a few hours.  We listened to 21 songs – because he's made two records of this [Sinatra project].  He felt that a lot of that music was written not only by great professional songwriters at the time, but a lot of it was written from the heart, from the wartime and [by] people just pining for a lover.  He felt there was a lot of spirit in that music. He felt there was a kind of beauty, a sacred ground for him. After having said all that, we then listened to the music, and I felt everything that he talked about. For one of America's great writers to say, 'I'm not gonna write a song; I'm gonna pay homage to what shook me as young boy,' I thought was very graceful and dignified." -Daniel Lanois

WHY AUDIOPHILES ARE PAYING $1,000 FOR THIS MAN’S VINYL:

"Prices for wish list titles like The Who’s Tommy, Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and The Beatles’ White Album would make a military contractor blush: $1,000.

Price gouging? Not according to Better Records owner Tom Port. He thinks a thousand bucks is a bargain to hear a classic rock opus sound better than you’ve ever heard it sound before—stoned or sober."
