Gym Music IV - Mosh Pit Workouts

So hopefully by now I have either:

1. Got you into some new bands for your regular workout routines
2. Got you to go to the gym in general!

Not everyone has to be a vein popping, over-muscled rock like you see in those supplement stores or magazines.  However, I do encourage people to get active and find ways throughout your day to keep your cardio up and your blood pumping.  I am not sure about the rest of you (*plug for comments here*) but I NEED something to listen to in the gym that suits my needs and intensity level.


Ever thought about where you can combine your love of music and also get some sort of workout?  I'm sure you can think of plenty of places to do so.  Ever thought to do the mosh pit workout routine?  Some people (and some professionals as well) would advise to get into a real gym and do some serious working out before stepping foot into a mosh pit at your local rock/metal show.  I see lots of health benefits (as well as risks) involved with gaining stamina while getting bashed around by potentially 100 other sweaty guys and gals.  I look at mosh pits the same way others would look at wrestling, MMA, or even swimming.  You entire body is using it's energy to repel hits and slams from other people and potentially an entire group (if you are caught in a 'wave').  Here are a few small tips I like to do before trying to get in my next moshing workout:

1. Know the band you are watching.

I doubt people will be enthusiastic about you starting up a mosh pit during a Mumford & Sons concert.  But at the same time, I think you could fit right in with some of the bands that I have listed below.  The band performing has a significant impact on the crowd reaction to them.  See what the setlist is going to be like, gauge the genre and maybe consider yourself an onlooker for the first song or two to see how the show is going to go down.

2. Know the audience.

Even when you think it's a good idea to start moshing around, the people around you can have a different idea of fun than you.  I will use my first Rammstein concert as an example.  I drove 10+ hours to Quebec city a few years ago to see my all time favourite band perform.  This was my first time seeing them as well as the people I was with.  I WAS PUMPED!

So what happened?  Everything went according to plan.  The bands came on (Apocalyptica, then Rammstein) and did one hell of a performance in front of 120,000+ onlookers.  To my surprise, nobody did any moving whatsoever.  A few heads were banging up and down but absolutely NO MOVEMENT from people even at a mere 50 feet away from the stage.  As I even tried to sneak through people to hopefully find some sort of pit, I was given nothing but dirty looks and people that refused to budge.

A reserve situation happened when I saw Seether years ago in London, ON.  Never did I think I would be caught in a mosh pit at a hard rock concert like this.  Still to this date I tell people it was one of the few concerts where I fell down and could not get back up.  Every time I attempted to, I was run over by other moshers or getting to odd appendage.  These two shows were great examples of how the audience and not necessarily the band can play an influence.

3. Know your limits.

If you are newby when it comes to a mosh pit, chances are you won't survive an entire evening of moshing.  As much fun as moshing looks it can get very tiring very fast.  I remember literally wringing the sweat out of my shirt following a Killswitch Engage/Dragonforce concert at the Kool Haus because it felt like 1 vs. 100 people out there.  Your muscles can get tired very fast so it's always good to take a break during a slow song or a tune you may not necessarily have on the top of your priority list.

Some great exercises may be (but not limited to) crowd surfing assistance, the push back from the 'wave', helping others get back on their feet, and trying to get to the front row.  If you need a lesson in any of these exercises then feel free to pass me a private message for a breakdown.  No pun intended. ;-)


While doing a little background research to see if anyone out there has come up with a formula for mosh pit working, I found a WikiHow page that outlines some do's and do not's when it comes to moshing.  Another great source of info for those looking to get some carido with their show:

"How to Mosh in a Mosh Pit"

Falling - Lift that person and make sure they are not hurt. They will probably just laugh and thank you before joining back in or stepping out if they are hurt. This could possibly be the most important rule of all, you must pick up a falling mosher at all times.

Copping a feel - It's wrong. Don't do it. Every female mosher isn't a groupie and if she doesn't get revenge on you, the guy beside you will get it. Not only is it wrong, it's very disturbing to a girl. But, it does happen, and if it does, call out whoever did it. More respectful moshers will usually push him away, or get between you and him.

Hitting - It's not a fight! If you hurt someone it is etiquette to maybe shake their hand or clap their shoulder. Do a friendly gesture and apologize (flashing the 'horns' and mouthing an apology over the music works). Also bear in mind that if you start a fight, you will be surrounded and greatly outnumbered.

The Pull out - When you're standing around an extremely violent/large pit watching the action and you see someone trying unsuccessfully to get out of the pit, if you think you can handle the pit, go and get them. It's always appreciated.

The Lift Up - If someone is hurt but no one will move to let them out of the crowd (which is common at larger festival pit and crowds), ask the people around you to lift the person up and body surf them to the front so security can help them out. Make sure to ask if it's okay first though as getting lifted freaks some people out at first.

Don't Be The Jerk - People on the sidelines are on the sidelines for a reason...They Don't want to mosh right now. Of course some will very soon others don't. Don't force anyone to mosh by grabbing them and throwing them in to the pit if they really don't want to. Sometimes this is a great way to start a pit but if a pit is already going and someones on the sideline don't force it. Also if they are holding a fist out in front of them they don't even want to be touched.

The Browning - Burn This World

Electronicore?!

Where the hell do people come up with these genre names?  No offense against The Browning since I'm sure they're not the only ones adding and removing information to their Wikipedia page, but couldn't there be a better way to describe this band other than a 'core' at the end of ever genre?  Deathcore, grindcore, mathcore, hardcore, post-hardcore, crunkcore, nardcore (WTF?), metalcore, melodic metalcore, and now electronicore?  I think from a marketing perspective that EDMetal sounds a little cooler?  Eh?  Eh?  (That's right everyone, I'm also available for marketing endeavours haha)  

Anyways, not making a fuss about the genre name since it means shit in the grand scheme of a band.  Others might tell you different but whatever...make your own conclusions.

So moving forward I was at The Annex Wreckroom last Friday night where my cousin (thanks again Mark!) twisted my rubber arm into hitting up the Chimaira show.  Weary at first since I have seen Chimaira well over 1/2 dozen times, but for $18, I doubt I was going to get a better deal for a show (Chimaira, Threat Signal, The Browning, Dark Sermon, and Dreamers).  Little did I realize how blown away I was going to be with the performance of The Browning!  Minutes after their performance, the merch tables flooded with new fans hoping to either grab an album or some of their t-shirt designs (which were pretty decent to boot).


Sound was top notch, the group was very in sync with each other, the EDM loops were crisp and clean, and even the light show has some great highlights during the set.  I was very happy at this point that my cousin dragged me along to this show.  It was one of those "I'm sorry for doubting you" kind of moments.  

Even though the band gives the impression that they have a small targeted audience (aka teenagers and quarter life crisis folks), the crowd dynamics for the live show was vastly different.  I saw ages from 15-45 headbanging like their was no tomorrow.  I specifically remember a gentleman about 40 years old with long hair and goatee wearing a Behemoth shirt standing right in front of me.  Thinking that this was way out of his league, him and his buddies ended up at the front (within the first 3 songs too mind you) of the stage just whipping their hair!  Really made me think twice about capturing their audience.

So The Browning.  Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri of all places the four piece group has won over fans in multiple genres with their unique blend of electronica, heavy metal, and straight up rock n roll.  The project originally started out with lone frontman Johnny McBee quickly turned into a full time project.  This also made it clear to Johnny that he would need to recruit members to the group.

The band started hard at work on their first single and released the music video for "Bloodlust" to promote the release of their debut album "Burn This World", which was released on October 3rd, 2011 via Earache Records.



After a few minor lineup changes and some relocations for the band (KC to Dallas), the group has finally settled on this lineup:

Drew Ellis - bass, rhythm guitar | Cody Stewart - drums

In what could be described as nothing short of 'adventurous,' THE BROWNING's music takes influences from all across the metal spectrum and heavily fuses them with hardstyle, trance and other areas of electronic music in a way that most metal acts would not dare attempt. The band pushes boundaries and pushes buttons. "Burn This World" was recorded at Random Awesome! Studios in Bay City, Michigan and was mixed by record producer Cameron Mizell.  Cameron has worked with many notable rock and metal acts such as Memphis May Fire, Oceana, The Word Alive, Capture The Crown, A Bullet For Pretty Boy, Sleeping With Sirens, Palisades, and many more.



An album that I have been listening to for some time now but never thought it would resonate so strongly in their live performance.  This is an ultimate go-to album for anyone looking for some beats at the gym.  I know I say gym music quite often but this style of music can blend into many different occasions like children's birthday parties, funerals, weddings, etc. (haha)

I tend to have "Burn This World" as a regular in my playlist or at least a few of the songs from it.  I will be the first to admit that the band and the album has some flaws.  The vocals tend to be in the same range for the majority of the album, giving little indication of Johnny trying out new ideas for vocal dynamics.  The other major flaw is the consistency of breakdowns.  Since the EDM loops are a main focus of the songs, the guitar and bass suffer greatly.  This leaves little room for both stringed members to show off skills related to their instrument.  I like a breakdown as much as the next guy, but every song tab look like 0-0-00-00-0-0 doesn't make it too appealing.  I'm sure as the band progresses you will start to see them venture out more into unknown territory.  Either that or they may just burn along with this world.



So if this album was released in 2011, what are The Browning doing with themselves?

Well, besides the extensive amount of touring they have completed over the last two years, the group has also ventured back into the studio to make way for their sophomore album "Hypernova".  Looking like they keep an eye on their timeline, the album is set to be released on October 1st, 2013 via (once again) Earache Records.  It will be almost two years exactly since the release of "Burn This World".


And as the poster says, this fall will also see The Browning kicking off their headlining tour in promotion of the album.  The tour will see support from This or the Apocalypse, Honour Crest, Tear Out The Heart and Myka,Relocate.  No Canadian dates (since they JUST came through here) but the rest of the US dates are listed on their official Facebook page.

Music Release For August 27th, 2013

Well hello Tuesday!

I always find that Tuesday release days are a good early break in the week.  At the end of the day, when at work people are always looking for something to make their day either go by fast, easier, or just have some groove with your paperwork.  Whatever the case may be, this week's releases are sure to bring some pleasure to your eardrums.  Some notable albums that won't go unnoticed around the music world are Franz Ferdinand, Ellie Goulding, and of course the highly anticipated new Avenged Sevenfold album "Hail To The King".

Mind you, we cannot forget about some staple albums hitting shelves this week as we see DevilDriver, Jars of Clay, Everlast, and Ministry all dropping some new material from multiple genres.  I am eager to get my hands on a few of these and have them spinning in my playlist for the gym tunes.  Nothing like some Dez Fafara screaming at you to pump that extra set and/or rep!

So the usual obnoxious rant folks.  I don't think I would have to do this so often if bands stopped bitching about 'stealing' their albums (that's another rant in itself) but for their sake and the rest of us in the music industry, head over to your local record store, online retailer or other legal source to grab one, two or all of these albums.  Just as long as you don't go bankrupt in the process (haha).

(Franz Ferdinand - Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action)

"It turns out the band are taking the zeitgeist by stealth. At first glance the album is merely some Jack Daniels-soaked madeleine to summon memories of another time. They could have tried to squeeze into their 2004 sonic wardrobe, but Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action is handsomely dressed in contemporary garb: Franz are ageing gracefully by getting fellow disco dads like Hot Chip and Norwegian dance producer Todd Terje to give their tracks a bit of modern production flair, but still cut their cloth with the same lines that flattered them before: strutting white-funk guitars, an emphatic rhythm section and a rounded lyrical character that, incarnate, would be a moderately successful architect whose airy sexual confidence is undercut by existential anxiety." -The Guardian

"The thing I’ve struggled with the most is simply determining if the album is good, bad or meh. Is it good because they accomplished exactly what they said they would, or it is bad because it doesn’t quite have as much of a wow factor as some of their previous releases? Or, is it just a combination of the black and white, resulting in a meh? Well, amidst my nitpicking, I can still say that I do at least like this album.  I would definitely rank Hail to the King higher than their past couple of releases, but it’s probably not up there in Avenged Sevenfold’s shining moments. But if you're already a fan, check it out and you'll probably be impressed. If you've never given them a try, then this could be the album to bring you in." -Metal Injection

(Ellie Goulding - Halcyon Days)

"Halcyon as a standard release is categorically dark. Much like Ellie’s debut album Lights, the follow-up includes handfuls of cuts that swim in a whirlpool of unrequited love, the need to move on, and/or the perseverance to keep at a romance that is worth the wait. Ellie has a gift, though, for masking morbidity within poppy uptempo beats (listen to the lyrics on “Lights” and “Anything Could Happen”; they’re darker than you think)." -Idolator

(Everlast - The Life Acoustic)

"To sum this album up, it surely is fantastic, but probably only something for the biggest EVERLAST fans since it spares out the biggest hits. But whoever had seen EVERLAST during his acoustic tour – like the RoD cred during Devilside Festival – will be bewitched by his great voice and will love this album." -Reflections of Darkness

(DevilDriver - Winter Kills)

AFGM: DevilDriver - Winter Kills

"So it would seem like a representation of flawlessness from here doesn’t it? First of all, nothing is perfect I’m afraid; second, I was still deliberating. Over time while listening to this album, I couldn’t help myself from yawning. DEVILDRIVER is an excellent piece of Metal machinery, and nothing would take that away from them, however, they sound like the next band with a probable lesser reputation. Their riffing stimulations and orientations, pivoting between Hardcore through Death to a smudge of Thrash, might be superb, but still nothing is memorable (or droning like “Gutted”). Kudos for Mark Lewis for the production and awesome sound, like the modern band next door, but regretfully, I wouldn’t come back to this one that fast. Also there are Fafara’s vocals, a fine frontman though his voice can be tiring as his vocal lines aren’t that close to be variant. Lastly, “Winter Kills” is DEVILDRIVER’s next move forward into a new horizon. Therefore, I suggest that you would get your hand dirty and tune to this one. Hopefully, in a future not far, DEVILDRIVER would upscale their melodic Death Metal techniques and elevate their efforts even further." -Metal Temple

But this comment was the one that made me laugh out loud...

"The problem with the bulk of DevilDriver‘s material is that it’s obviously geared for teenagers. Not as blatantly as, say, Arch Enemy‘s, but despite an inherently cool vocal approach, Dez’s emotional range only fluctuates between two settings: Adolescent angst and tough-guy posturing. Thus, you end up listening to DevilDriver because:

A) You need to drive somewhere very quickly, or
B) Your boss is a dick." -Angry Metal Guy

(Michael Monroe - Horns and Halos)

"Difficult second album?  Not a chance this band has absolutely breezed it and that old wives’ tales has been totally blown away with consummate ease. In fact I’d go so far as to say If there is a better band out there making record today then please step forward because I haven't heard them.  The time has come for Michael Monroe and his band to go global and push on through and 'Horns & Halos’ has the class to step up and take anything and everything it wants.  The world is their oyster and once again Michael Monroe and band have delivered the goods in spades. Give it five out of five, ten out of ten, horns up, record of the week, number one with a bullet, top of the class - rate it however you like, but if you only buy one more record this year then this is it. So go do it NOW!" -Uber Rock

(Decyfer Down - Scarecrow)

"After Decyfer Down's long silence, it's good to hear new material from the rock outfit. This album shows lead singer TJ Harris truly taking the band's direction into his hands, owning a sound that has progressed from but still ties into the original sound of 2006's End of Gray. Although the pacing is at times rushed and the songwriting is a little hit or miss, the hit moments certainly drive home. Thematically, the album boldly strikes a balance between calling out the prideful while also recognizing a personal need for grace, backing it up with aggressive guitar grit and striking melodies." -New Release Tuesday

(Jars of Clay - Inland)

"Original at the core and rooted in practiced experience, Jars of Clay has stayed incredibly fascinating after nearly two decades of work, and it makes an album like Inland all the more impressive. Regular risk-takers from the start, a band like Jars of Clay has had plenty of chances to coast, but Inland demonstrates that the band's identity rests in revitalizing change. Music News and New Music For August 27th, 2013...

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am somewhat patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

I remember having a manager, who also managed Thursday and Shadows Fall at the time, explain to us all of the opportunities that were closed off to us because we were too heavy or jarring musically. I remember Century Media Germany and the European market not really “getting” Determination.

I remember not being able to draw flies on headlining tours with bands like Bleeding Through, Avenged Sevenfold, and Trivium opening up, and being flummoxed as to why it wasn’t connecting. Twelve Foot Ninja - Silent Machine

BE READY I'M COMING FOR YOU!

At first glance and listen, the band didn't have much to offer in ways of game changing.  The first song "Coming For You" showcased some great promise for Melbourne's Twelve Foot Ninja and their debut LP "Silent Machine".  The song had that radio friendly melody while at the same time offering that low end breakdown that the rock/metal industry craves for.  I admit that the tempo and structure of the song changes drastically as they seem to go from metal to Latino to funk and then full circle.  A bit hard to wraps ones head around initially but after letting the groove sit in and blend with the vocals of Kin I was starting to get a bit of repeat on the playlist.  These guys have been together for 5+ years now (established in 2008) and seemed to have found the right formula for both music and music videos.

Now I'm not the biggest guy for band comparisons but I can understand why names like Zappa, Mike Patton, Coheed & Cambria and others have been thrown around to compare these guys.  Like I mentioned the other day when having a conversation about TFN, they are not necessarily a game changer but have paved a style that works with them and their fans.

The album was produced by lead guitarist Steve MacKay, while the mixing process was collaborated by Christian Scallan and Tetsuya ‘Ted’ Furuhashi. The final mastering of the album was done in LA by Howie Weinberg (who has also done work with Deftones, Nirvana, Jeff Buckley, Muse, and more). If that weren't enough, he band also worked with UK artist Keith Draws to produce a 72 page comic book.  You can check out more of the comic info HERE.

"We released 12 x digital tracks along with 12 x comics over 12 weeks in the lead up to our debut album SILENT MACHINE.  Each comic is based on the corresponding song’s lyrics, and inspired by fable of Twelve Foot Ninja (co-written by Stevic). Major music websites such as Metal Sucks have equally gotten the idea of this band and have even repeated feelings I myself thought about these guy upon first, second and third listen (haha).

Ever since Periphery guitarist Jake Bowen sent us a link to Twelve Foot Ninja’s video for “Mother Sky” I’ve been hooked. I watched that video at least three times that day, and the creepy kabuki girl imagery therein quite literally infected my dreams that night. I listened to all the samples the band had on their website and eagerly awaited the release of Silent Machine. I bought the album as soon as I could and I’ve been jamming it ever since; might’ve listened to it four times this past weekend alone. -Metal Sucks

I happy to report that since discovering these guys they have announced a 2013 North American tour alongside fellow Australian musicians Dead Letter Circus US's Periphery & Born of Osiris.  Should be a mighty good time as I am a big fan of all four bands! (only three on the stops in Canada but...meh)


So if y'all are looking for a change of pace with your music while at the same time not diverting away from your core grooves, Twelve Foot Ninja's Silent Machine is a great way to keep your day going.  I don't know about all of you but even after going to three nights of concerts this week, I STILL had TFN tunes ringing in my head.  "Silent Machine" has already seen a release in Europe and Australia but fans in North America will have to wait until October, 2013 for a chance to pick it up.  Recommended AFGM tracks for "Silent Machine" are:

Music News and New Music for August 22nd, 2013

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am somewhat patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

DEVIN TOWNSEND Talks 'Retinal Circus', Touring With GOJIRA:

The Rock Pit: I wanted to ask you about the "Retinal Circus". Tell us a little bit about that.

Devin: "Retinal Circus" was an idea that took about a year to bring to fruition and what the basic thought behind it was the end period of the DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT with "Epicloud" and four records and all this. It seemed like appropriate use of our resources to make a show that essentially put it all in one place and gave us an opportunity to sort of make an overview of everything that I had done. And so "Retinal Circus" ended up being this really theatrical, very strange show that included elements of all my solo records more or less and some elements of STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and then it was wrapped up into a story, including Steve Vai. In a lot of ways, it was a real purge for me; it allowed me to represent the past, sort of confront the real nerdy elements of it and just make it larger than anything I've made. It was a cool experience.

You don't think I could leave you with just two full streams today did you?  Since the first post was an EP, I felt like I cheated some of you dedicated readers into only 18 minutes worth of tunes.  So once again Sumerian Records has done what they do best and promote their bands.  One of the bigger acts on their label, Born of Osiris, released a new album last Tuesday (Aug. 20th) titled "Tomorrow We Die ∆live" and has been highly anticipated by many in the metal industry.

A group that has consistently increased their presence and writing abilities with each album, BOO has transformed themselves from mediocre opening act to highly demanded main stage material.  I recommend you all give a closer listen to the guitar work on the album as some of the sweeps will simply blow your mind.    The overall production of the album is crisp and clean as well.  You can easily identify each instrument on the album making it simple to follow along for covers and playthroughs.





















City In The Sea Streaming ENTIRE "Below The Noise" Album

And for the second part of the FREE online streaming, we give you one of the latest additions to Sumerian Records.  A five piece group hailing from Scottsdale, AZ, the group was just signed to Sumerian Records in the fall of 2012, City In The Sea spent little time resting.  The group had been hard at work prepping their debut full length album and touring nonstop with tons of bands such as Capture The Crown, Ice Nine Kills, Stray From The Path, Emmure, Born of Osiris, and even tagged along on the 2013 Rockstar Mayhem Festival (of course the Sumerian Stage).

With many positive reviews about the album, I figured it was about time to unleash the entire album on AFGM (with help of course from YouTube and Sumerian Records).  Have a listen and drop some thoughts of your own if you are inclined.

You got to give it up for labels that embrace the new changes of the online world and the music industry in general.  Both Rise Records and Sumerian Records are notorious for releasing albums prior to their release date for a chance to promote the groups music.  I think they have the mentality of "listen first and buy later" attitude which resonates with me.

I've said this time and time again online... there are 10,000 bands all looking to be the next big thing so what does your band have to offer that others do not?  Uploading entire albums onto a free streaming site such as YouTube is a great way to showcase your label's bands so you don't feel cheated after buying the album.  So this is another example of this online free stream.  Below, you can check out Atlanta's Woe, Is Me and their new EP "American Dream".  Five songs in length totaling 18+ minutes should be just enough to get you through breakfast. haha
