Music News and New Music for August 22nd, 2013

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am somewhat patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Matt Mays Plays Intimate Acoustic Shows on Canadian Fall Tour:

"I love playing on my own with just an old acoustic guitar or a piano. It's how all of the songs on Coyote were conceived. Late at night in a haze, or with a coffee in the morning. It's how I met the muse on these songs. I've wanted to take that vibe on the road, and now I am." -Matt Mays

Dark Tranquillity Announce North American Tour With Omnium Gatherum & Exmortus:

"Greetings darklings!

As most of you know, we're hard at work preparing the live set for the upcoming "Construct" touring cycle. Spirits are high and we're confident that we have a lot of very special shows ahead of us. Those of you located on the North American continent will be pleased to know that we'll announce some good news tomorrow.

On another note: Those of you who have seen us play this year might have noticed that we haven't had a bass player on stage. "Construct" was written and recorded as a five-piece, and since the band chemistry is at an all-time high and we've never been the ones to shy away from new creative solutions, we wanted to try out playing with the bass on a backing track as opposed to bringing more flesh and blood to the fold. Much to our delight the results have been great, and we have decided for now to let the band be represented on stage by the five people who have spent a total of more than 100 years in the service of D.T."

Born Of Osiris Debut “Machine” Music Video:

Canadian composition Blurred Lines goes accidentally viral thanks to Robin Thicke:

"Beckwith’s Blurred Lines explores non-traditional textures and techniques on both harpsichord and violin. The intentionally detuned violin intervals send shivers down one's spine, in a very different way from Thicke’s smooth vocals. Apart from the title, the 10-minute composition shares nothing in common with Thicke’s controversial pop hit."

DEVIN TOWNSEND Talks 'Retinal Circus', Touring With GOJIRA:

The Rock Pit: I wanted to ask you about the "Retinal Circus". Tell us a little bit about that.

Devin: "Retinal Circus" was an idea that took about a year to bring to fruition and what the basic thought behind it was the end period of the DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT with "Epicloud" and four records and all this. It seemed like appropriate use of our resources to make a show that essentially put it all in one place and gave us an opportunity to sort of make an overview of everything that I had done. And so "Retinal Circus" ended up being this really theatrical, very strange show that included elements of all my solo records more or less and some elements of STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and then it was wrapped up into a story, including Steve Vai. In a lot of ways, it was a real purge for me; it allowed me to represent the past, sort of confront the real nerdy elements of it and just make it larger than anything I've made. It was a cool experience.

CHTHONIC's 'Set Fire To The Island' Video Released:

"This is the live video we shot when we first played the song. It's the most exciting song to play off the entire album!  It has now become a 'tradition' for the fans in Taiwan to come to our show with ghost money, they throw in the air to show respect and release all kinds of their emotions.  When I see the ghost money thrown in the air, sometimes the scenery before my eyes seems like a dream." -Doris Yeh
