One of those bands where no matter what they put out, you seemed to get sucked into them from the moment they release their single. I am talking about Orange County's Throwdown!
While the band had initial success with their debut record "Haymaker" and their follow up "Vendetta", Throwdown soared to the top of people's playlist as they slowly but surely honed their sound more to the liking of Pantera and that dirty southern tunage...with their unique twist to it of course.
Since the release of "Deathless" in 2009, the band has remained rather quiet with touring only a handful of times following its release. Kind of sucks when you feel a band is on a good groove and/or momentum only to not hear anything afterwards for quite some time (coughtoolbandcough). Time sets in, other bands release new material and the world still spins the past four albums. So it was with surprise that we hear Dave announcing some studio time back in May, 2013:
"It has been almost four years since 'Deathless' came out, which is about twice as long as the time between albums before it. While that has probably been annoying for fans that have been waiting and expecting a new record, it has also been the best thing for the writing process for the new album. I've written a lot of lyrical content coming off as rehashed. I was meticulous, if not a little obsessive, about making all venture into similar territory. It's been two decades since I've been straight edge. 'Avow' is about how it was important to me." -Peters
That being said, at least fans knew that new music was on the way but with no real time frame. Maybe the anticipation makes it that much better for the fans waiting to hear the tunes. Then, basically everything came at us at once, just like a promotion should be! The album name, cover, track list, and single all for you to saturate and reflect on for that $12.99 you will eventually spend to buy a copy of the album. I am just joking with the price though, I have no idea how much it'll cost. haha

Zeuss (who has done previous work with Hatebreed, Crowbar) has been the buzzword around their production team. Taking care of duties in the past for Throwdown on "Deathless" and "Vendetta", he was called on to mix the new album.

Intolerance features guitar solo contributions from Dave Nassie (Bleeding Through, No Use For A Name, Infectious Grooves), who joined Throwdown’s recent touring lineup alongside Demon Hunter drummer Tim “Yogi” Watts and Deathless-era bassist Mark Mitchell. Throwdown’s Intolerance stands as a testament to sheer force of will. One again, the gods have blessed us with a great mix of albums being released this week. From the mellow classical tunings of Howard Shore and his soundtrack to "The Hobbit" to the down tuned breakdowns of Honour Crest, there's a lil something for everyone. Good timing in a holiday sense.
Evergreen Terrace took me by surprise with their newest release "Dead Horses", as well as Childish Gambino as I follow Donald Glover on his show "Community" but never took me for an MC. And this is his second album...where have I been?! Anyways, looking forward to listening to it as well as the many others below.
The usual debacle bestowed before you as well folks. Do I:
A) Download the album(s) and save my money for their live performances.
B) Buy the album and leave it at that.
C) Download and do nothing.
Don't be the dick and pick "C" because you're just cheap. Show some love either way and pick up a physical copy at your local record shop or online retailer. If digital is your thing, then make sure to buy from a legal source. Cheers and enjoy!

Although cobbled from six different shows, Live at the Cellar Door sounds like a cohesive entity. The recordings have been remastered with such love; each string on Young’s acoustic rings with clarity and weight, and each crack in his voice stings with resonance. And yet, a distant haze pervades the record that could convince listeners that this is an actual bootleg on wax. -Paste Magazine
(Howard Shore - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Composer Howard Shore's magnificent, appropriately epic work on director Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy garnered the Canadian composer three Academy awards, and rightly so. When Jackson decided to tackle The Hobbit in 2012, it took little convincing to bring Shore back to Middle Earth along with him, and the resulting Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of three installments, dutifully reflected the lighter tone of the pre-Fellowship film while paying homage to the darker adventures that follow. For The Desolation of Smaug, Shore honed the themes introduced in An Unexpected Journey and amped up the darkness and bombast, introducing a memorable new cue to accompany the arrival of the film's scaly antagonist. -All Music

Truth be told, the album doesn't know if it wants to be a competent standalone piece or part of a larger multimedia device, but like anything else on the internet, it's up to the consumer to figure that out, and maybe that's the point. Either way, Because the Internet is a vast improvement over his debut effort, showcasing an artist who has confidently found a way to coalesce his love for music and films into one hybrid effort. -Exclaim
(Scorpions - Unplugged in Athens)
The production and the sound are very good - as expected I would say. Actually it is bit too good. A few more edges could have been good.
This album might be needed by some 'hardcore Scorpions collectors' who needs to have everything from the band. All the ones who want to have a good Scorpions overview - go for "World wide live". And everybody who wants to listen to a good acoustic album I recommend Tesla's "Five man acoustical jam". Fore sure a better investment. -Markus' Heavy Music Blog

Honour Crest recorded their Rise Records debut with acclaimed producer Cameron Mizell (Sleeping With Sirens, Memphis May Fire) who perfectly compliments the group's unique blend of heavy rhythmic guitar work and intricate programming. The right touch of Electronica, intertwined with super techy guitar sets this record apart from similar bands in the Metalcore scene, propelling songs into epic anthems without losing any of the edge. Dead Horses is consistently catchy and overstuffed with the raw energy that feeds directly from their “drunk-off-punk” brand of hardcore. (Velvet Underground - White Light White Heat: 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition)
The recording is muddled in spots, sometimes coated in an almost white noise of treble, but it’s fuzzy nature is part of its charm, and part of the story this tells, of a band that was always practicing, always experimenting, even on stage, and how they translated that to this challenging record. But White Light/White Heat is less a lofty experiment that keeps the listener out than a curious twisting of structures and conventions that lures them in. It’s songwriting and storytelling. It’s melody- and noise-making. It’s high art and low-brow punk. It’s all these things and none of them at once, as incongruous and inventive and fascinating as the man at the center of it all, Lou Reed. (Mastodon - Live At Brixton 2012)
If you’re listening to the soundtrack rather than watching the digital video, disc 2 is where the magic really happens. It kicks off with a four song onslaught of some of the strongest moments on ‘The Hunter’ ‘All The Heavy Lifting’, is followed by a thunderous version of ‘Spectelight.’ 'Curl of the Burl’ is next, its huge, grooving riffs sounding even weightier live than they do on record, followed by ‘Bedazzled Fingernails,’ its off-kilter rhythms demonstrating just how tight and virtuous Mastodon are when playing at their peak. They show off how brutally heavy they are capable of being with ‘Where Strides The Behemoth’ and ‘Iron Tusk’.
This digital video and audio package will be a perfect stocking filler for any Mastodon fan, though if you’ve already got their albums it’s probably only worth watching the digital video due to the live audio recording of the vocals slightly letting the original versions of the songs down. That said, as an album the Live At Brixton is a fantastic collection of the best songs of one of metals most unique and revered bands. -Alt Sounds
(Nightwish - Showtime, Storytime)
Overall the DVD brings to the table many new elements within Nightwish. It reflects the mood of the band, the good energy, and the enjoyment that they had when they play a show, something that it was missing last time I saw them at the North American kick off tour show in Atlanta, GA in September 2012. I am personally glad they survived another change and that people had received the new members with arms wide open. I am really eager to see what is next for Nightwish, and of course to listen the music they can created in this new era. This is definitely a must have DVD, not only because is another piece of Nightwish‘s history, but because it shows a more intimate part of the band. -The Age of Metal
Even though my first and only time seeing Metallica did not resonate those goosebump feelings you normally get when seeing musicians of that caliber, I was very intrigued when Metallica announced they would be performing in the last place I would expect a band to perform...ANTARCTICA!
"We are playing Antarctica; it's pretty wacky. It's crazy, because I don't deal with cold very well, so I have my reservations. But it should be pretty cool, because we've played the North Pole before — we've played Tuktoyaktuk [in 1995]— so we have to play the South Pole. Tuktoyaktuk was fine; it wasn't as cold as it sounded. But I have a feeling that the Antarctica is a lot colder than the North Pole. And it should be an interesting experience." -Kirk Hammett
The thought of Hammett, Trujilo and Hetfield having to pluck those strings in those freezing temperatures (Today was Antarctica's coldest day on record...135.8 degrees F below zero) just makes my fingers cringe. Nonetheless, I'm sure Coca-Cola took care of the band and their physiological needs throughout their time spent there. The concert took place under a dome at the Carlini Argentine Base and was heard by the fans through headphones, with no other amplifiers or sound system. The gig was also live-streamed in the participating countries.

Holy shit! Now as most of you may not remember or recognize this band, this happened to be one of my favourite new groups upon moving to the big city of Toronto. That transition in my life from my hometown of Chatham to my new location of Toronto was where I discovered Evergreen Terrace. After a very successful spin of their 2004 release of "Writers Block", I was hooked on the unique sound of the band and started to stream and buy their original tunes such as 2005's "Sincerity Is an Easy Disguise in This Business" and 2007's "Wolfbiker". I'm pretty sure that self titled single "Wolfbiker" and "Chaney Can't Quite Riff Like Helmet's Page Hamilton" were tracks that stuck out and got me hooked!
Evergreen Terrace has been blazing their own path through the melodic hardcore scene for over a decade. Anchored by guitarist/singer Craig Chaney's clean vocals, punctuated by lead singer Andrew Carey's viciously screamed vocals. Evergreen Terrace parted ways with founding guitarist Josh James, drummer Caleb James, and left Metal Blade Records in 2012. Former bass player, Jason Southwell, rejoined the band at the end of 2012, moving Alex Varian from bass to guitar. Drummer Brad Moxey filled out the lineup on drums. In 2013, the band signed with Rise Records and recently finished tracking their Rise debut entitled "Dead Horses" produced by Stan Martell of Martell Studios in Kingsland, Ga, and is planning a fall/winter 2013 release. The Florida-born five-piece never depended on anyone to push them forward. So fast forward a couple years to around 2009 after the release of their album "Almost Home". A very strong effort from the group and brought forth some notable singles such as "Enemy Sex" and "God Rocky, Is This Your Face?" The band toured Europe and landed on a few decent band tours. But in reality, the ET camp went cold. Thinking that the project was dead in the water, I turned focus away from the band and put it towards other groups putting out new material.
Then on March 8th, 2013:
"We are proud to announce our signing to Rise Records. We will be tracking a new record this spring for a summer/early fall release." -Evergeeen Terrace

Metal Blade Records are keeping the YouTube hits flowing now that they have released a slew of music DVD and live performances from their bands. While the heavy and dark stuff tends to be the forefront of Metal Blade Records, I enjoy the metalcore aspect of their roster. Both Unearth and As I Lay Dying have composed some decent live performance DVD's in the past few years and due to the fact that I don't own a Blu-Ray player, it's nice to see these video uploaded in 720p online!
That being said, another gem of the Metal Blade store. As I Lay Dying compiled THREE DVD's into a bundle package they call "This Is Who We Are". The DVD's comprise of the band's past history, present live performance and the (at the time) future of the band. Aside from the major headlines that Tim Lambesis has been causing with his murder-for-hire scheme, the band has really been in the spotlight of metal since their release of "Frail Words Collapse" and their climb to victory. Seeing them at least 3-4 times now live, I know how intense and energetic their live performances are. These DVD's are almost throwback memories now of myself swinging away in the moshpit. Enjoy!

Three-DVD sets are not assembled for people who can either take a band or leave a band; they are designed for the ultra-devoted fans who live and breathe that band. And As I Lay Dying have had plenty of fans, both Christian and non-Christian, who really are that passionate -- which made the arrival of This Is Who We Are in April 2009 long overdue. This three-DVD set includes a documentary on the first DVD, live performances on the second DVD, and videos and various bonus features on the third DVD. It's a lot to absorb, certainly, but then, As I Lay Dying have plenty of followers who are enthusiastic enough to watch all three DVDs from start to finish and not get bored. One of the things that This Is Who We Are addresses is the fact that As I Lay Dying are a Christian band with a strong connection to the secular metal world. Indeed, the San Diego residents have toured with secular metal bands extensively -- they are hardly a band that only tours with other Christian bands -- and they have attracted plenty of secular and non-Christian followers who will no doubt eat This Is Who We Are up. So what's their secret? The fact that they aren't overbearing about their Christianity doesn't hurt; even though As I Lay Dying are coming from a Christian perspective lyrically, fans who are atheists or agnostics and fans who practice religions other than Christianity don't find them off-putting. And the fact that they have an attractive sound (metalcore/alternative metal with elements of Scandinavian-style death metal) is a plus. This Is Who We Are isn't recommended to casual listeners, although fans who have been following As I Lay Dying religiously (so to speak) will welcome its arrival. -All Music
After a slightly disappointing sophomore release from the genre bending Periphery group, I was not so ecstatic for future material. However, I still showed my support and went to their North American tour and try to hit up their shows whenever they visit Toronto. While I am still looking for them to play classics such as "Light" and "Insomnia", their live show still resonates even with newer songs from "Periphery II: This Time It's Personal".
So "Clear" was the buzz word surrounding Periphery and social media the past few days. After the initial YouTube sample, I was hooked right back into the energetic expectation for this January 28th, 2014 release!
Clear is an experiment to explore all of the different writing styles in the band. It's rare when you have a band where every member is capable of writing and producing music. With each member controlling their own track, this recording enabled us to go down any path we chose in terms of style and sound.
"Every track also contains a melodic theme established in Clear's intro track Overture this common thread links all of the songs together, even though they all sound wildly different. Clear shouldn't be confused with our new 3rd full-length album that we're currently working on, nor should it be considered an EP as it rides somewhere in-between clocking in at 30 minutes. As much as I have respect for Misha and his inventiveness, I had a feeling that the other members of the group were holding back on their writing abilities. Being able to perform Periphery songs in general call for some talent which of course means there is some writing ability in there somewhere. Hell, Mark helmed the Haunted Shores project along with Misha while Matt has been running his own online music teaching website known a BANDHAPPY. So those examples right there show that these members have quite a bit of talent and [with the right direction] have a long career ahead of themselves.I guess we will see come January 28th...
So this would be the right time to go through all the subscriptions in my YouTube feed and see if we have any noteworthy music videos and live cuts. Like most times I log on, there are a few hundred videos to go through that consist of pretty much anything in the music world (album singles, teasers, VLOGs, tour updates, lyric videos, etc.) and much like my countless hours spent in front of a TV watching Much Music in my youth, I love to see what a band produces visually. Well hello everyone and welcome back to a delayed edition of music releases for this week. Being that I have been mixed in my choices for music genres the past few weeks, I am kind of happy to see old visited bands dropping new material such as Pro-Pain, Boston and Black Flag, while at the same time discovering some newer groups like I Exist. Mind you, these are new to myself while bands like I Exist is on their (I believe) third album and have been touring their hometown of Canberra, Australia since early 2009.
Pro-Pain got me all excited since I discovered these guys when in my days at high school as they released it back in October, 2000. Eight albums later and they are still belting out the New York hardcore tunes like they were a Pez dispenser. The other note I am looking forward to checking out is Muse and August Burns Red as they both have DVD's coming out this week. Muse apparently gave a unreal filming experience for this DVD so looking forward to the lights, sound and production, while August Burns Red made themselves a behind the scenes documentary of their "metal titans" touring nonstop around the world!
Other albums to take notice to would be of course the wizard himself Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater and Boston's "Life, Love & Hope" (their first release in over 10+ years). Nothing to shy away from and will give you plenty to listen to for the rest of the week/weekend. So even though we got some notable names here on this week's releases, even Jordan Rudess is selling his album solo without the help of a label so be sure to hit up your local record store, online retailer or other legal source to pick up these albums. (Boston - Life, Love & Hope)
There are still moments — like on the chorus of the album-opening ‘Heaven on Earth’ — when the band’s trademark formula clicks into place with a perfectly infectious chorus and that famous Tom Scholz guitar tone. But that buzz rarely lasts for an entire song, and far too often what turns up instead is highly generic pop-rock filler.
You’re not supposed to judge an album by its cover, but compared to ‘Boston‘ and ‘Don’t Look Back”s scenes of escape and exploration, the ‘Life, Love & Hope’ artwork does rather effectively portray the image of a band that seems somewhat aimless and adrift at the moment. -Ultimate Classic Rock
(Black Flag - What The...)
To its credit, What The… has a consistent sound and mood. It's a hectic, seemingly willfully grating album with a madcap, almost cartoonish feel, epitomized by Ginn's theremin, which turns up frequently as a kitschy accent. The style of the record might be called punk, but it's a punk that feels distinctly 90s, with loud, funky, extroverted bass and swaggery, cornily danceable cadences. (For a representative sample, spend 98 seconds with "Shut Up.") In fact, the most Black Flag-ish aspect of these songs might be the way that—in keeping with the album cover—they defy the dumbed-down caricature of the band as the quintessentially angsty first-wave hardcore outfit, opting instead for a cocky flamboyance that's at odds with the lyrics' generic harangues against fools and fakers. -Pitchfork
(Pro-Pain - The Final Revolution)
For my money, Pro-Pain are one of the best kept secrets in heavy music. They have consistently made excellent albums that tap the vein raised by NYC hardcore and thrash bands like Anthrax, S.O.D. and Exodus. Their sound is heavy and pounding, topped off with raging and understandable lyrics grunted by mainman Gary Meskil. Unafraid to tackle injustice, Pro-Pain have been raging against the machine much longer than most bands and have never stopped to even take a breath.
If you enjoy Pro-Pain you’ll definitely enjoy this. It’s a bit more dynamic than the band’s new millennium albums and for that many fans of their early works will likely be drawn back in. Don’t hesitate to give this one a chance if you haven’t been following along in this millennium. -Metal Forces Magazine

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend! Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning. I guess that's how I use AFGM in general. These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.
These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:
1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.
2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.
3. I am somewhat patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me. I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can. Canadian music rocks!
4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh. Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it. They're the ones causing the comments.

Lostprophets Members Address Ian Watkins's Crimes in New Statement:
Earlier this week, we learned that the allegations of child sexual abuse against Ian were true, and that he would not be contesting them in court. Until then, we found them extremely difficult to believe and had hoped it was all a mistake. Sadly, the true extent of his appalling behaviour is now impossible to deny.
Many of you understandably want to know if we knew what Ian was doing. To be clear: We did not.
We knew that Ian was a difficult character. Our personal relationships with him had deteriorated in recent years to a point that working together was a constant, miserable challenge. But despite his battles with drugs, his egotistic behaviour, and the resulting fractures and frustrations within our band, we never imagined him capable of behaviour of the type he has now admitted.
We are heartbroken, angry, and disgusted at what has been revealed. This is something that will haunt us for the rest of our lives. Being in a band has always been a labour of love and a platform to inspire people, not to take advantage of them. It's still hard to believe this is happening and that someone we were once so close to has destroyed so many lives, lying every step of the way.
Our hearts go out to Ian's family, the fans and friends he betrayed, and most importantly, the victims of his crimes and others like them. We hope for justice, but also that Ian will truly take responsibility for what he's done. We would urge any other victims to contact the authorities.

As usual, I say something in an interview and of course fans have a problem with it. I don’t know why i continuously feel like I should have to defend myself, but because no one is able read between the lines to understand why I said what i said.. I can’t help but want to try and encourage people to use their brains for something other than typical tumblr nonsense. I quoted in an interview that “Motionless In White are not about preaching the message anymore or pushing the be yourself shit” Yes. Myself and the band as an entity have decided to stop the preaching. If you’ve been to any shows of ours since I think Warped Tour of 2012, you will notice that I put an end to the speeches and on stage rants, I don’t post anything people may find inspirational and I have completely stepped away from social networking on a regular basis. This has been an occurrence that has taken place for over a year, so why only now that I brought it to peoples attention in an interview are they whining about it? When are people finally going to get it through their heads that MIW is not the same band it was when Creatures came out? Why did I say that in the interview? *cracks knuckles* *takes deep breath*
Three very big reasons. #1. 8 out of 10 bands, clothing lines and public figures around now are on the “inspirational message” train. I’ve been watching it grow for the past few years. I can’t see a band anymore without hearing the same regurgitated and hollow words come from their mouths. I haven’t seen a clothing line released lately without the accompanying message in any variation the company decides to convey it. Do people not realize that they are being scammed? Are people too stupid to see that the “message” is a money making failsafe plan? These bands and companies realize that people are responding heavily to the “message” thing and many of them have no problem using that to their advantage. I’m not saying in any way that we were the first band to claim any sort of message.. fuck no we weren’t. But I can assure you that I never spoke a word I didn’t mean in an effort to take your money. You can see how us carrying on as a band but not wanting to prey on the willingness of said money spender would demonstrate the sincerity of where we’re at as a band now. It’s bullshit and I want no part in it any more. It’s that simple. I’m going to write the lyrics I write because thats how I feel and thats how it’s always been. I’m not your life coach and my lyrics aren’t supposed to be a guideline as to how you should live your life. I’ve said that before. IF people want to find hope or inspiration from them then hey, thats amazing and i’m incredibly honored, but i’m not writing them for you, I’m writing them for me. It’s all on you as to what you take from them and how you allow it to help you. #2. This “you saved my life”, “you’re my hero” and “you’re my voice” thing has become an unbearable burden and a downright eye roller. NO. I did not save your life. NO.. band X, Y or Z did not save your life. IF in fact you were on the brink of any self harming action… it was YOU who pulled yourself from the ledge. You saved your life, You are the hero. Why are people not willing to take credit for their own actions? Thats right… because thats what fans think bands want to hear. I’m not taking ANYTHING away from people who do self harm or have a hard time with any aspects of their lives. We’ve all been there and having gone through those things myself shaped who I am today and made me want to use music as an outlet. I do agree that music can be a very helpful tool in helping you overcome whatever is ailing you, but in the end it’s only you who had the strength to pull yourself out of it. I am strictly speaking out against the many many people i’ve seen approach me in the most absolute insincere, dishonest fashion with the “you guys saved my life” lines. I wish I had video of it so you can get the full effect. I can see right through it. It’s as though that has become the new “hello” when approaching a band member. What happened to “hey man, great show”, or “Hey guys, I really like your record/song”? Why does fucking EVERYTHING have to be laced with the “omg like you totally saved my life, and my friends life and her cats life” or the “you’re a huge inspiration, you’re my hero”? Can someone please tell me how the FUCK these bands who write lyrics about getting wasted or degrading women have saved your life? Seriously? It’s giving the people who really do deal with this stuff a bad name. Not to mention that on many occasions, I’ve seen people tweet things at me, then i’ll go to their twitter page only to see that they literally copy and pasted the same words to 15 other band members with only the intention of getting a response from one of us so they can screen shot it and brag about it. Disgusting. And you wonder why I just want to just simply write/play music and get the fuck out of that world of things?? #3. The hypocrisy amongst the very same fans who are upset with me is just embarrassing. I see fans every day tweet at me and say that I’ve helped them, but then will see that same person rip someone else apart over their opinion of something, the bands they like or a certain musician they like etc… Just go to a bands youtube page and read the comments on one of their music videos. Or better yet, go to my instagram and read the daily wars that happen between comments on my photos of things completely irrelevant to what they are arguing over. Seriously, I can post a photo of something like a cool piece of architecture I came across on tour and somehow @Andrew_bring_me_the_memphis_sirens_to_remember and @JulieMotionless_may_fire_the_horizon_bloodysuicide will end up tearing each other to shreds over Ronnie Radkes recent haircut. It’s sickening that people who claim that music has helped them and gave them any sort of values and morals to live by treat others with such disrespect. You’re full of shit. Looking back on everything I’ve ever said makes me realize that underneath it all, MIW’s main message has always been about not giving a fuck what people thought and encouraging you to do the same. We stopped with the preaching and pushing. We changed our style of music to sound like how we wanted to sound without fear of losing fans. We’ve maintained our image regardless of criticism. We are pulling back from the shit like putting “fuck” or “666” or fucking upside-down crosses on shirts just to sell merch because those are the only shirts kids fucking buy anymore. We are doing whatever the fuck we want and if that means our time has come where our band isn’t welcome anymore, then I feel sorry for you that you chose to support the opposition and for pushing out a band that now solely cares about what music, at it’s core, should always be about… giving people their money’s worth with the music/lyrics and live show. 90% of the people that are pissed at me and that i am referring to in this blog (based off of the comments I’ve read) are younger kids. I am an adult and we see things very differently. I’m not looking to spend the rest of my career on the playground. It’s not that I don’t care, its that I do care. The concept of Black Friday has really got me scratching my heads on what Canadians will do to save a couple bucks. Are you buying to save money on Christmas presents? Getting the latest gadget/electronic because last year's model isn't quite cutting it? Did you spill coffee all over your tablet when you heard about Black Friday sales and now need a new one? North American culture has turned simple retail holiday sales into a basic animal instinct frenzy of angry, furious and physical shoppers. Has this become our cultural norm? "The land of the greedy and home of the depraved", as one online user commented and I couldn't agree more!

Why is all of this relevant to AFGM? Well my friends, I simply hate the commercialism that has formed behind the months of November and December as we part ways with our wallets in exchange for the next upcoming distraction for our lives. It makes no difference what side of the 49th parallel you are on at this point, the companies you buy mass quantities from only care what their profit margin will increase to. And since most current governments want to continue this tradition to "stimulate the economy", this doesn't look like it's going to end anytime soon. That being said, I couldn't think of a better flashback for Friday than my original Black Friday band, Rage Against The Machine!

The band released this song ("No Shelter") in February of 1998, and resonates sentiment even more now as our credit cards continue to compound with interest, declare bankruptcy, foreclosures on houses, and pay rates being cut lower and lower to point of where living just above the poverty line is the country's standard of living. It only makes sense that the once superpower of the world would attempt to push as much product as they could so that the it would eventually trickle back to the gov't. I think the other funny fact is that now police officers have take away from their normal duties and patrol routes to intervene with a few delinquents fighting tooth and nail for $1.28 towels. F**king towels people! I highly doubt that the slave labour kids making these product(s) would get any benefit out of something as Black Friday. Can you imagine an ad like this:
"For one day only on Black Friday, slave workers will now only be paid $0.08/hr instead of the usual $0.10 and are now passing the savings onto YOU!"
More pieces to the puzzle granted, but I'm sure you can relate to and enjoy the sarcastic commentary I am providing here. So back to the music side of things. Rage Against the Machine has a long standing feud with commercialism, elitism, lack of transparency, and overall lack of freedoms that humans, not just Americans, should have as a right...not a privilege.

I know it seems like I am going on a tangent here with my sentiments towards Black Friday and [in big picture] what it stands for. I just cannot stand the fact that we have people spending an average of $292/person on a single day and almost 1/2 the country (as well as US) will be taking part in these "savings".

Sounds like fun right? Do you find that this kind of mentality for shopping and simple distraction will be a decline in society or a increase in our economy? Do YOU feel Black Friday will help us as a whole or hinder us? Does it create more or less of a middle class society? Not to mention the current mentality of our big box stores (Walmart, Target, etc.) that most customers flock to for savings. That extra couple bucks you just saved could have paid the employee you ran past a salary that is above bare minimum wage or even some health benefits for the eventual concussion they are going to receive when opening their doors in early hours of the morning. Don't believe me? Feel free to look up past Black Friday incidents that have occurred and where the majority of them have taken place.
