Music News and New Music For November 4th, 2013

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am somewhat patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Eminem, Macklemore top inaugural YouTube Music Awards:

"A short while later Schwartzman and Watts admitted they would be working the 90-minute show without a script — with just notecards standing between them and awkward pauses and brief technical difficulties."

The 10 Best Moments From The 2013 YouTube Music Awards:

"After an ambitious and awkward 90-minute production, the inaugural YouTube Music Awards have disappeared into a cloud of blue chalk dust. The ceremony, streamed live from a warehouse in New York, attempted to capture the madcap spirit of early MTV and only occasionally succeeded — and if success means a lot of eyeballs on the broadcast, this was a total faceplant; the live stream never went past about 215,000 people at a time, according to Variety. But this is YouTube, the format that has done more than maybe even DVR to normalize the highlights-only, morning-after viewing experience. Those who did tune in witnessed many forehead-slap-inducing moments — anybody up for a surprise Michael Cera appearance? No? — but there was also magic in the air when they turned incredibly talented, creative people loose.

About that magic: Here’s a list of the 10 best moments from this 'festival of excitement'."

Lindsey Stirling Performs with John Legend for "All of Me":

RUSH's 'Clockwork Angels Tour' To Receive Theatrical Premiere:

"Rush: Clockwork Angels Tour" was filmed and recorded last November at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, during RUSH's highly successful "Clockwork Angels" tour. The eleven month-marathon world tour crossed North America twice and ventured overseas to Europe in support of the band's acclaimed 2012 studio release "Clockwork Angels".

An exploration into the history of Toronto’s music scene:

G&M: Your upcoming book, Then & Now: Toronto Nightlife History, is a survey of influential but defunct nightclubs over the last 40 years or so. In your research, did you come across anything that ties everything together?

DJ Denise Benson: I think the biggest thing, whether you’re talking about Toronto electronic music or Toronto hip hop or Toronto rock, is that while Toronto is a large city and a hub for the music industry, up until fairly recently people haven’t really been interested in their own city as they are now. And when you look through the decades, because there wasn’t as much focus on the city it has meant that people have largely been able to do what they want to do. It’s been very individualistic, and what’s mind-blowing is the range that has been produced here. All that happened organically.

ZAKK WYLDE Performs Solo Acoustic Version Of 'Lovin' Woman' On EMG TV:

10 Things You Didn't Know About Johnny Cash:

"Johnny Cash: The Life, published this week, covers Cash's monumental highs and bottomless lows in unprecedented detail. Think you know Johnny Cash? The book is stuffed with warts-and-all revelations that might surprise you, and will certainly boost the singer's profile as a man of many contradictions."

Celine Dion on her new album, competition, and the Vegas strip:

"So now I have an album coming out amongst so many others as well because they're in show business and they're very active and I'm not at all. So now I'm having an album. I need to have new songs. Because My Heart Will Go On (on on)!

You're in competition with yourself. I am constantly ... I don't want to expect anything from any projects because I don't want to be disappointed but I love what I do and it matters. And I hope it's got a long life and I want to please the people who want to hear me or want to come and see the shows. It's teamwork, the fans and the artist. I don't sing for myself. I pick my songs because they need to come from within but it's to offer (them up) and hopefully it will be (loved). We love to please."

David Bowie to Appear in Louis Vuitton's New Campaign and Film:

Tears for Fears cover Arcade Fire’s ‘Ready to Start’:

Weezer Reportedly Planning New Album with Producer Ric Ocasek, Eyeing Greatest Hits:

"Cuomo also apparently said that he may release a fourth instalment in his Alone series of home demos and added that a greatest-hits album is in the works. Given Weezer's recent output, many would argue that a Weezer best-of should probably consist of The Blue Album and 1996's Pinkerton compiled onto a single CD with "Island in the Sun" tacked onto the end."

DREAM THEATER's 'On The Backs Of Angels' Performance Clip From 'Live At Luna Park':

SYBREED Singer Quits; Band Pulls Out Of SOILWORK Tour:

"This is the most difficult and worst announcement that we've ever had to make, and we were not expecting to have to, but, unfortunately, we do not have the choice... So here it goes:

One month ago, it's with great sadness that Benjamin [Nominet, vocals] had to inform us that, because of reasons beyond his control, he won't be able to participate in the upcoming tours scheduled. He, consequently, after a lengthy period of reflections, decided to leave SYBREED, for professional and personal matters.

On the rest of the band's side, we have therefore chosen to cancel all our upcoming engagements, which include our participation to the SOILWORK tour, considering that replacing Ben on such a short notice is out of the question, not only because it verges on the impossible, but mainly because we don't want to. He is now and always will remain an important part of SYBREED's identity, as well as one of its founders. So we will take some time off to focus on our other projects, and in time we'll see where we stand.

We would like to thank Benjamin with a warm heart for those great years spent with him as SYBREED's singer, but also as a true friend.

We are all very sad about this unexpected situation and still shocked, but it is what it is and nobody is to blame, just a mix of very sad and unexpected circumstances.

We also would like to apologize to the bands and the staff involved in the Infinity Tour, and to our fans who expected to see us on stage on the upcoming days. We feel really awful canceling on such short notice.

And most of all, we would also like to thank all the people we worked with and all the fans that supported us in the past ten years, we are very lucky to have you and will never forget.

See you, hopefully, as soon as possible."

Teachers tuned in to music preservation:

"The Cooper Smith Music Library Collection is being named after Eileen Cooper and Bonnie Smith. The two teachers have spent more than a decade compiling and labeling sheet music for choral, jazz, string, ukulele and winter festivals. The collection allows music teachers from throughout Victoria to borrow sheet music for their class at no cost."

In Toronto’s music scene, ‘There’s something going on.’ Will city hall listen?:

“There’s something going on. Toronto has found its expression of live summer music like never before.  I think by 2015 we will be able to boast a festival or major outdoor show on every weekend of the summer.” -Jeff Cohen (promoter behind the inaugural Toronto Urban Roots Fest)

Obey The Brave Debut "Lifestyle" Music Video:

Forbidden music - Turning Point Ensemble performs once-banned works:

"The Forbidden Music showcases composers and music the Third Reich loved to hate. Under Nazi-defined ideas of “race,” state-sponsored anti-Semitism meant composers of Jewish origin were prevented from practising their craft. The ban wasn’t just for the present: great figures of the past like Gustav Mahler and Felix Mendelssohn were also unacceptable."

METALLICA Is 'Contracted' To Host ORION MUSIC + MORE Festival In Detroit Two More Years:

"Detroit was a great experience. We'd love to bring this thing back to Detroit. We've gotta sit down and look at the practical parts of it. And our good friends at (promoters) C3 (Presents) have gotta sit down and probably get their calculators out and all that stuff that we try to stay out of . . . It's not an easy thing to launch a festival, but we've had a lot of fun the last two years doing it, and we hope to bring it back to Detroit." -Ulrich

Northlane Debuts "Dream Awake" Music Video:

Taking their music to the next level:

“A superior concert facility fundamentally changes the way you play your instrument. That’s why we were so happy to be able to give our students the chance to perform at a state-of-the-art hall like the Maison Symphonique. It’s going to be a great addition to their education.” -Douglas McNabney (Interim Chair of the Performance Department at the Schulich School of Music)
