We Built This City on Rock N Roll!

Yeah I know that title is from San Fran's Jefferson Starship, but I thought it appropriate nonetheless.  So light of that...TGIFF everyone!

I'll be out of touch for the next lil while as I continue my travels to New York City this weekend.  Now I thought to myself 'what could be a good sign off for the week?'

I thought to pay a tribute to some great NYC bands over the years that I grew up listening to through high school and college.  Some amazing groups have made quite the name for themselves while emerging from the NYC hardcore scene:

Madball (New York, NY) - All or Nothing

Anthrax (New York, NY) - Caught In A Mosh

Sick of It All (Queens, NY) - Death or Jail

H2O (New York, NY) - What Happened? (feat. Lou Koller & Matt Skiba)

Life Of Agony (Brooklyn, NY) - Through and Through (on MTV2 Headbanger's Ball)

No I'm sure you folks can think of many, many more bands to name off coming from NYC and I encourage the YouTube links/comments.  Cheers and see you all next week sometime!

Emilie Autumn: Fight Like A Girl

OK folks, so the girl is ready to fight and coming back to Canada for another round of touring.  I am of course speaking about Emilie Autumn.  This chick has her very own unique performance, full of theatrics and such.  Inertia Entertainment has been pretty consistent with her and her shows in Toronto, so they decided to bring here back across the border once more!

"Beautiful, bizarre, and brazen sonic seductress and violinist extraordinaire, EMILIE AUTUMN wants you to fight alongside her on this fall's 'Fight Like A Girl' tour.  Known for her eccentric style and prodigious musical talent (she began reading notes before learning the alphabet and was already playing violin at four years old), Emilie spent her youth playing concert halls throughout the U.S. and Europe as a classical violinist before going mad, landing herself in an insane asylum and emerging as a rock singer with a murderous streak.

Taking its name from the title track and first single of her forthcoming album due out this month, the follow-up to her groundbreaking debut, 'Opheliac'.

The show promises to be an experience. With a theatrical thread, a little classical flare, and the right dose of dirty rock 'n' rollattitude, the 'Fight Like A Girl' tour will undoubtedly be EMILIE's most memorable run yet. If you're one of her affectionately dubbed "Plague Rats" or among the uninitiated, this is a sexy spectacle that's not to be missed. Beyond her violin virtuosity on stage, she elegantly strikes that effervescent balancebetween sex, violence, and English literature. Part Broadway, part burlesque, part rock concert, part history lesson, there's nothing quite like it anywhere…

'It's more brutal and bloody,' affirms the ringleader with a playful grin. 'There's more girl-on-girl action and glitter. The corsets are even tighter. It's become Victorian Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It's a rollercoaster. You're going to feel like you’ve stepped into a dark Disneyland.'

About the single, Emilie comments:  'The song kicks off the record, and it's about women realizing that they are in fact 51% of the population, and learning how to take back their power. In the story, the inmates of a Victorian insane asylum for girls break free and go on a rampage against the doctors who terrorized them.  For me, 'Fight Like a Girl' means to fight like the ultimate badass you are. It's time to take back the words and phrases that are used to ridicule girls and insult boys and transform them into sources of power.  If you're going to live, then fight, and every fight scene needs a good soundtrack. This record is my soundtrack. Of course, there's an overriding story arc. It's a social critique of the mental healthcare system spanning from the 19th century all the way up to the present, as well as the inequality women still face worldwide, whether they’re 'crazy' or not. I’m drawing upon my own personal experience as a notoriously bi-polar person who has been committed and lived to tell the tale. Hopefully, my story will give strength to those who need it, and raise a little awareness.'

The tune undoubtedly will, especially as EMILIE is set to perform it nightly as a fitting precursor to the release of the album next year."

1. Fight Like a Girl
2. Time for Tea
3. 4 o'Clock (Reprise)

5. Take the Pill
6. Girls! Girls! Girls!
7. I Don't Understand

10. Scavenger
11. Gaslight
12. The Key
13. Hell is Empty
14. Gaslight (Reprise)
15. Goodnight, Sweet Ladies
16. Start Another Story
17. One Foot in Front of the Other

"The marching rhythms of ‘One Foot In Front Of The Other’ rounds things off in a somewhat triumphant manner after the preceding tracks of, well, misery. The album version of this track is much more enjoyable than its live incarnation – likely a testament to treating the album as a whole and coming out at the end with a sort of light at the end of the tunnel.

Make no mistake, ‘Fight Like A Girl’ is depressing as hell. The downright scary shit that Emilie has gone through isn’t toned down (if it is, God help her) so if you’re easily triggered, be warned that there are some serious things going on here. Credit to Emilie for dealing with it through her art and creating such a grand vision, but that makes it no less terrifying.

‘Fight Like A Girl’ is a call to arms. Chances are, each person will take something different from it. As Emilie remarks at her live shows, no two people in attendance really look alike, and the same can be said for what each listener will leave this album with. Ultimately, it is theatrical, epic, empowering, scary, depressing, catchy, accessible, and most importantly, brilliant." -Espy Rock

"It’s difficult not to take this album track by track and describe the musical story you’re taken on, though this review is still ridiculously long even though a few songs were skipped. This is the opinion of someone familiar with the concept but not the exact story itself, so perhaps you think this viewpoint is completely off the mark. If so – music is there to be interpreted! So there!

‘Fight Like A Girl’ is theatrical and it’s a musical journey. Considering Emilie intends to turn this into a three hour production, it’s not difficult to see that happening. Musically, this is a journey that plays on various aspects of the human condition, that toys with choices of putting up a fight or sitting quietly and letting life slip you by. Having seen much of this in a live setting, the prospect of the whole record being given a theatrical stage is an exciting prospect. It’s not very often an artist can tap into the alternative genres, yet also create an album designed for a stage show, yet Emilie is a law unto herself.

For those who like something quirky and for those who like theatre, this release comes highly recommended. It lives up to every expectation that Emilie has given it: it’s dramatic, it’s a journey and it contains a certain fragility and strength throughout – ‘Fight Like A Girl’ doesn’t just rely on the plot of a pre-written tale. Everything from the direct threats in lyrics to the tiniest musical nuance were strictly designed for this story, and it’s a story well told." -Indulge Sound

Periphery - Passenger

“Hey everyone, I hope you guys dig the re-recording of Passenger. We wanted to include a bonus song specifically for the reissue of the self-titled record, and since I had just joined the band at the time we were deciding which song to include. Basically, it made a ton of sense to go ahead and re-record this one and release it as a PERIPHERY song.

Stylistically it always made a ton of sense to do so, and since the song was originally written by myself, Misha and Spencer, it always kind of felt like a Periphery song anyways! So enjoy it. And remember, this isn’t a track from the new album session – it’s only for the re-release of the self-titled record. Get pumped for the new stuff!! much love.” -Mark Holcomb
