Music News and New Music For November 11th, 2013

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am somewhat patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Deadmau5 Compilation 'We Are Friends Vol. 2' - Album Premiere:

"As people grow older, they often experience changes in the brain that compromise hearing. For instance, the brains of older adults show a slower response to fast-changing sounds, which is important for interpreting speech."

"Other notable winners include Justin Rutledge (Contemporary Album of the Year for Valleyheart), Mo Kenney (New/Emerging Artist of the Year for her self-titled album), Lynn Miles (Solo Artist of the Year for Downpour), Ian Sherwood (Contemporary Singer of the Year for Live at the Hive) and Dave Francey (English Songwriter of the Year for So Say We All). Alan McGee: how I discovered music:

"I’d never bought an album before I heard David Bowie. I thought albums were for grown-ups. After finding out about Bowie, though, I went out and bought Ziggy Stardust. I still think it’s one of the best 10 albums ever made. I must have listened to it about two thousand times and I think this is when my dad decided there was something wrong with me. My room was covered in posters of him and he was all I talked about. He thought I was in love with Bowie. He was right."

Alanis Morissette Bringing 'Jagged Little Pill' to Broadway:

"I look forward to taking the heart of Jagged Little Pill and expanding its story, fleshing it out into ever deeper layers of emotionality, specificity, humanity, power, physicality, spirit and fabulism.  I look forward to collaborating with Vivek and Tom and our whole inspiring team to create something greater than the sum of our parts." -Morissette

Sexually explicit music videos 'should have ratings system':

"There's no doubt there's a huge amount of racism and sexism in music videos and it's great that this campaign raises awareness about it. I can't see any reason why these videos wouldn't be classified in the way that other forms of media are but the truth is that it won't be a silver bullet.

Technology these days makes it pretty nigh on impossible to stop under-18s viewing and sharing this kind of material so as parents it's important to talk to them about what's wrong with it. As a society we need to consider how we've got to a situation where misogyny and racism is so commonplace." -Justine Roberts (founder of the website Mumsnet)

Dave Grohl producing Zac Brown Band’s new album, performs at Country Music Awards:

"Because the internet I'm here, because of the internet we're all here. It's the language of earth.  Everyone keeps saying by this or that year, Mandarin or Spanish will be the most dominant language, but the internet is already a language we are all connected to; even my dad can understand the meme format. But the thing is, there are no rules, which is also the awesome thing."

Alzheimer's patients' brains boosted by belting out Sound of Music:

"Even when people are in the fairly advanced stages of dementia, when it is so advanced they are in a secure ward, singing sessions were still helpful. The message is: don't give up on these people. You need to be doing things that engage them, and singing is cheap, easy and engaging." -Jane Flinn (neuroscientist at George Mason University in Virginia)

WITHIN TEMPTATION's 'Hydra' To Feature Rapper XZIBIT, Ex-KILLSWITCH ENGAGE Singer HOWARD JONES:

"'And We Run' song is about how you've got to live your life now. He's rapping at full force on this song, it's really heavy.  Xzibit brings a new element to our music that we've never had before! It's a new cross-over and we love it!" As for the mighty Tarja, Sharon recalls: "The way she delivers those high melody lines left us all speechless. We had a great time, and the fans responded beyond our expectations."

"I always loved Howard's voice.  He makes the song even heavier than it already is. That song is one of my favorite songs on the record and one of the fastest we've ever written. It has the most bass drums we've ever used, too, and a very fast riff which we doubled with synths. It's not a typical synthesizer, though — it's distorted like a guitar, and it's very aggressive." -Sharon Den Adel

Obey The Brave "Full Circle" Video:

"After grinding on the road ALL year, we finally benefited from some time at home to relax and write new tracks. We're about halfway done writing the new record and figured we'd give you guys a little taste of what's to come. No studio plans or album release date yet but we'll definitely keep you posted in the coming months. In the meantime, check out "Full Circle" and let us know what you think. Later homies." -OTB

CALIBAN - 'Ghost Empire' Cover Artwork Unveiled:

"Another great artist told me about Chris and his art. When I checked out his page, I loved his style and amazing drawings straight away. So I wrote him a message if he would be into designing a t-shirt design for us. It turned out great, so there was no doubt whom to ask for the new album artwork for 'Ghost Empire'! I told him what the album is about and he said that he would love to do it. It didn't take long for him to come up with first ideas which were amazing! I hope we can work with him on other projects in the future, he is a great guy and easy to work with and I think the result speaks for itself!" -Marc Görtz

3 Inches Of Blood Release New Live Video For “Look Out”:

Slayer Forge On After Jeff Hanneman's Death:

Jeff gave us – there was a song leftover from the last album that Jeff finished as an afterthought that was called "Piano Wire." It wasn't on the album because it wasn't as good as the other songs. I knew Jeff as gonna work on the lyrics and get it done. He was always talking about reworking the song. When you try to make a song better, you pretty much have to deconstruct it to make it better. I know there are two other ones, which are incomplete things, which he had for 15 to 20 years. Those will come out. My big thing is that I don't want people to say "Oh, that's a bummer that this was Jeff's last song." I want people to say, "this is awesome that this was Jeff's last song." -King

Children Of Bodom’s Alexi Laiho & Revocation’s David Davidson To Guest On New Marty Friedman Album:

"Looks like the cats outta the bag, I collaborated with one of my favorite guitarists ever and got the chance to co write a song for his new record." -Dave Davidson (Revocation)

METALLICA's James Hetfield Performs With Kids At 'Rockin' The Bay Benefit' Event:

New Study Paints Psychological Portrait Of Heavy Metal Fans:

"Abstract:

Previous studies have reported reliable associations between personality and music preferences, but have tended to rely on cross-genre preferences at the expense of preferences within a single subgenre. We sought to overcome this limitation by examining associations between individual differences and preferences for a specific subgenre of music, namely, contemporary heavy metal. A total of 414 individuals from Britain were presented with clips of 10 tracks of contemporary heavy metal and asked to rate each for liking. Participants also completed measures of the Big Five personality traits, attitudes toward authority, self-esteem, need for uniqueness, and religiosity. A multiple regression showed that stronger composite preference for the heavy metal tracks was associated with higher Openness to Experience, more negative attitudes toward authority, lower self-esteem, greater need for uniqueness, and lower religiosity. In addition, men showed a significantly stronger preference for the tracks than women (d = 0.54). These results are discussed in terms of the psychological needs that contemporary heavy metal fills for some individuals."
