Music News and New Music For February 4th, 2014

So of course, when running your own blog solo it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth,. CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am rather patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humourous and we can ALWAYS use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Toronto entrepreneur, 26, makes Forbes magazine’s ’30 under 30′ list for music:

"We knew that the music industry was in trouble.  We saw that more and more artists were not making their money in selling their actual music.  I’ve always been passionate about the music industry. When I was young I owned and operated the largest sheet music community on the Internet and I play music myself.  If you’re a young person and you have dreams and ambition, there’s nothing stopping you from creating the next Google or the next Facebook. That’s what drives me." -Derrick Fung (creator of Tunezy)

British Columbia to End Beer Garden Restrictions at FestivalsBritish Columbia to End Beer Garden Restrictions at Festivals:

"Once legislative changes are made, festivalgoers will be able to roam the grounds with a pint, rather than being restricted to a cordoned-off beer garden. This will help decrease costs for festival organizers and allow parents with kids to enjoy a beer and remain with their family, as they might at a hockey game. In addition, mixed spirit drinks — rather than only beer, wine, cider and cooler products — will also be permitted at events like music festivals and regattas, with continued restriction of sales to minors."

[Then] I wasn’t in the band anymore, so I decided to do what I learned in Seattle – we started a band, bought a Dodge Van and played clubs. And that was 20 years ago." -Grohl

KISS Featured In New GOOGLE PLAY TV Spot:

Dave Mustaine’s (Megadeth) Pairing With The San Diego Symphony:

“Dave Mustaine will be a featured soloist with the San Diego Symphony in April, 2014. The classical special concert, billed as “Symphony Interrupted” will take place at Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego, California on Saturday, April 12, 2014 @ 8:00 p.m. Ticket are on sale now at www.sandiegosymphony.org/calendar/view.aspx?id=3944.

In this truly unique concert event, master guitarist Dave Mustaine of the thrash-metal pioneers Megadeth brings his crunchy and energetic sensibility to the great works of classical music which have inspired him over the course of his Grammy-nominated, multi platinum-selling career. When Dave Mustaine performs the virtuosic “Summer” and “Winter” movements from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, and Bach’s classic “Air” on the G string, you will see a truly different side of “metal”.

The San Diego Symphony will then wow you in the second half of the program with Antonín Dvorák‘s famous New World Symphony. Following the Dvorak will be Richard Wagner‘s “Ride of the Valkyries“, and who knows… someone might just feel inclined to walk back on stage to rejoin the members of the San Diego Symphony in an encore performance where heavy-metallic sparks are sure to fly!

On speaking with Dave, he confirmed that he and conductor Ken-David Masur are considering adding a solo over “Ride of the Valkyries“.”

AP: Is there an album in the works?

Alex Linares: "Right now we’re just locked in a room writing music. There’s no certainty as to what’s going to come of it. Maybe it’ll be a full album and two years of worldwide touring, or it’ll be 30 demo songs and that’s it. I think positively and hope for the best, but I can’t promise anything."

MICK MARS Says He Will Work On Solo Album, Book After MÖTLEY CRÜE Calls It Quits:

"A solo record. People have been asking me for that for years and years and years. And 'Why hasn't Mick written a book?' So that, of course, is gonna be in the works. I haven't started anything or figured out who I want to write with me, or help me write it. But doing that kind of a thing. Putting together, probably, a cool band with some cool friends of mine and stuff, and going out and doing some… you know, a few weeks here and a few weeks there, touring… but not as the MICK MARS BAND; I won't do that. [laughs] You'll see, like, a name, and you'll go, 'Hey, who's that?' 'I don't know' That's the name of the band." -Mick Mars

Jeff Hanneman Remembered By Slayer On What Would Have Been His 50th Birthday:

"Today would have been Jeff Hanneman’s 50th birthday, presenting us with another reminder of how much we all miss him since he passed last May 2. The entire Slayer family appreciates the fans' tributes and recognition of the trails Jeff blazed in thrash metal and the songs he wrote that defined a genre. We - the fans, the press, the Slayer family - know what Jeff’s accomplishments were, we know the long-lasting effect his talent will continue to have on young musicians just starting their careers. Jeff Hammenan belongs to US, the rebels, the misfits, the mavericks, the ones who go left when everyone else goes right, the ones who push against the grain and introduce real change into the world - just like Jeff did.

Happy Birthday Jeff!"

Skinny Puppy's Music Was Used for Torture, So They Invoiced the Government:

cEvin Key: "We had a cool concept on the record because we heard through a reliable grapevine that our music was being used in Guantanamo Bay prison camps to musically stun or torture people. We heard that our music was used in at least four occasions. We thought it would be a good idea to make an invoice to the U.S. government for musical services, thus the concept of the record title, Weapon."

PT: Given that so much of your music is protest oriented, how did that make you feel to learn that your music was being used to torture prisoners?

cEvin Key: "Not too good. We never supported those types of scenarios. It's kind of typical that we thought this would end up happening, in a weird way. Because, we make unsettling music we can see it being used in a weird way. But it doesn't sit right with us."

We’re excited to announce that we’ll be returning to Europe in April on the Impericon Festivals in Vienna, Manchester and Cologne. To our friends in Canada and the US, we’ll have some good news for you as well in a few weeks. Thanks for sticking around with us after all these years. Can’t wait to see you all and crush the stage, one more time. Keep it brutal." -DI

Meshuggah Planning Official Releases And Special 25th Anniversary Shows:

"A quarter century of deviance

You try to wrap your head around it but comprehension fails - it's been twentyfive years since the first official Meshuggah release!!! The selftitled (though often referred to as "Psykisk testbild") EP came out on the small local Umeå label Garageland Records in 1989, making 2014 the big TWO FIVE for the band!! Hoooly s**t!!

Who would have thought huh!? - That our small group of young guys would get to - not only write and record our own quirky, deviant style of metal - but that we would still be doing it a quarter century later, making our living off of what we love to do!! Now in our forties we can't but look back at it jawdropped and baffled at the fact!!

We always set out to do something new, something different from the music we heard around us - something that would be a challenge to ourselves to write, learn and perform. Something truly unique. Looking back at our career we feel that we have actually been successful in doing just that!!

We have for so many years been blessed with a super loyal fanbase and a still-growing one at that, allowing us to continue to create freely and without boundaries! For this we sincerely thank all of our fans that have stood by us all this time!!!

To commemorate this great anniversary we have a few different cool things coming out in 2014! Those will include among other things a few official releases, but as to not completely kill the suspense immediately, we will come back with more info on that during the winter and spring. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for more news on this in the next few months, on our official site as well as MySpace/F.B etc.

One thing we can announce at this time though is that we will be doing a few select "25th Anniversary" festival dates both European and in North America, out of which one will be us closing the Marquee stage at Graspop festival with a special 25th anniversary set on Sunday 29th of June! More info on additional dates will soon follow!

I'll stop blathering now. Just want to say, from all of us in the band to all people whose support keeps us going strong still : THANK YOU!!! And here's to another 25!!" /Tomas Haake - Meshuggah
