Music News and New Music for June 6th, 2014

So of course, when running your own blog it can be tough to keep up with the s**tload of stuff that comes across our ears over a weekend!  Some good, some bad, some not even worth mentioning.  I guess that's how I use AFGM in general.  These articles that I go through everyday from various sites (Blabbermouth, CBC, National Post, AV Club, Exclaim, Music News, Rolling Stone, etc.) and sort of "filter" some of the nonsense news such as the latest fashion design, who's got beef with who and who ISN'T doing music...still.

These articles brought forth are for a few different reasons:

1. It is relevant music information that pertains to you as a reader, no matter the level of intent or the genre.

2. They are relevant to the music I would be currently listening to or a genre I have put some attention and focus on.

3. I am rather patriotic about my Canadian music, so that always comes as a first for me.  I enjoy music from all parts of the world respectively, but I still have to promote local if I can.  Canadian music rocks!

4. Because it's humorous and we can always use a good laugh.  Rarely will it be at someone's expense...but then again I am just the guy talking about it.  They're the ones causing the comments.

So in closing, I trust you all will not read EVERY single article posted here.  But I hope you find something of use here and keep the conversation going by forwarding it onto someone else.  Click on each article heading for redirection to the full article.  Cheers!

Pirate Bay Co-Founder Peter Sunde Arrested:

"He is extremely talented and I still think that the judgment was wrong.  It's about being on the cutting edge if one is going to be successful... But if one is too far ahead it is not always about success. Peter fought for file-sharing and in 10 years I think it goes without saying that file-sharing for one's own needs will be allowed." -Peter Althin

'Jesus Christ Superstar' Musical Cancelled:

Indie Music Labels Set to File Complaint Over YouTube's 'Strong-Arm' Tactics:

"According to WIN [Worldwide Independent Network] members, the contracts currently on offer to independent labels from YouTube are highly unfavorable, with non-negotiable terms, and undervalue existing rates in the marketplace from music-streaming partners such as Spotify, Rdio, Deezer."

Woodstock Organizer Plotting 50th Anniversary Concert for 2019:

Apple introduces MFi specs for Lightning cable headphones, support arriving in future iOS update:

"The Lightning headphones will be capable of receiving lossless stereo 48 kHz digital audio output from Apple devices and sending mono 48 kHz digital audio input. The input means that the headphones will also support a microphone for audio input following Apple’s upcoming update. Manufacturers will be able to take advantage of Apple Headphone Remote controls like Volume Up/Down/etc, as well as other buttons for launching specific apps such as iTunes Radio or initiating playback controls on iOS. In addition, the headphones can be made to work specifically with a companion iOS app and launch a specific app when connected to an iOS device."

Devin Townsend premieres animated video for Casualties Of Cool track ‘Mountaintop’:

“I have been a fan of Jessica Cope's work for a while now, and the opportunity to work with her rose for this album and we are thrilled with the result.  Although the concept of the video is loosely based on the concept of the record, we found it worked better as a stand-alone piece. Che and I therefore decided not to have the characters in the video portray us personally.” -Townsend

SOUNDGARDEN Planning Deluxe Edition Of 'Badmotorfinger', B-Sides Compilation:

"We definitely have discussed giving this treatment to 'Badmotorfinger', for sure.  There are some B-sides, live material, I believe there may be rehearsal material.

'Badmotorfinger' was very influential in the rock community. It had a strong influence on other musicians. 'Superunknown' probably did as well, but its success was not just with musicians but with fans as well. 'Badmotorfinger' had an impact with listeners but also with guitarists and drummers and singers, people who started bands. It definitely deserves the same kind of treatment we're giving ['Superunknown']." -Kim Thayil

U.S. to Review Rules Covering Pandora Songwriter Fees:

“Since the Ascap decree was last reviewed in 2001 -– before even the iPod was introduced –- new technologies have dramatically transformed the way people listen to music.  The system for determining how songwriters and composers are compensated has not kept pace, making it increasingly difficult for music creators to earn a living.” -Paul Williams

Beastie Boys Win $1.7 Million in Monster Energy Copyright Lawsuit:

"A federal jury in Manhattan issued the verdict on the eighth day of trial in a copyright dispute between members of the Brooklyn-born band and the energy drink maker over songs the band says Monster used without a license in a 2012 promotional video."

Mike D Says Beastie Boys Won't Be Making Any More Music:

"We have not been able to tour since MCA, Adam Yauch, died.  We can't make new music." -Mike D

Axl Rose Confirms 'Chinese Democracy' Sequel:

"We recorded a lot of things before Chinese was out.  We've worked more on some of those things and we've written a few new things. But basically, we have what I call the second half of Chinese. That's already recorded. And then we have a remix album made of the songs from Chinese. That's been done for a while, too." -Rose

GUNS N' ROSES: 'Appetite For Democracy 3D' Coming to U.S. Cinemas This Month:

Tom Rounds, Rock Festival and Radio Pioneer, Dead at 77:

"While not a household name, Rounds' achievements and initiatives influenced generations of music lovers to this day. In 1967, Rounds, disheartened at seeing security get increasingly confrontational with concertgoers at indoor venues, conceived the Fantasy Fair & Magic Mountain Festival, a precursor to Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock that now stands as the first U.S. rock festival."

Linkin Park To Be Inducted Into Guitar Center's Historic RockWalk:

"We're honored to have our music recognized by our peers.  But to be added to Guitar Center's RockWalk on Sunset Blvd, right where we started, is pretty surreal. We're really grateful to be here alongside so many of the artists that inspired us." -Chester Bennington

"Innovative and influential. Those are the two major traits we look to honor with Guitar Center's RockWalk, and LINKIN PARK has them in spades.  Not only that, but they have one of the largest fan bases of any current rock group. It is due time they put their hands in some cement." -Dave Weiderman

Nirvana’s 2014 ‘Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’ Induction & Ceremony:

DAVE GROHL Names HBO Series, Talks Next Two FOO FIGHTERS Albums:

"After making the 'Sound City' movie, I realized that the pairing of music and documentary worked so well because the stories give substance and depth to the song, which makes a stronger emotional connection to it. If you know the story behind the artist, or the story behind the studio, or the song, it widens your appreciation for the music.

I thought okay, this is going to be the story that will influence the next FOO FIGHTERS record. We're coming up on our twentieth anniversary, we're an American band. Each one of these cities have had artists and music that have influenced us directly, so let's go there.

You'll recognize FOO FIGHTERS in this record but you'll also be surprised by us. We're doing things that we've never done before. And I want to say that it's only eight songs but I think it might be our longest record because, as I was writing these songs, I had to take a cinematic approach.

I already know what we're doing for the next FOO FIGHTERS record… I came up with this idea a month and a half ago. The guys were, like, 'Dude, we have to finish this first.'" -Grohl

GODSMACK - New Single '1000hp' Preview:

[The album is] "a little bit more raw, a little bit more open. The writing was a little freer. The production is really kind of raw and in your face, and the songs, man — I'm really, really excited about these songs. And I have to tell you honestly, I wasn't that excited about writing this record at first." -Erna

Sinead O'Connor Renames New Album 'I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss':

"When a little boy asserts himself, he's called a 'leader.' Yet when a little girl does the same, she risks being branded 'bossy'.  Words like bossy send a message: don't raise your hand or speak up. By middle school, girls are less interested in leading than boys—a trend that continues into adulthood. Together we can encourage girls to lead.

Originally I had a different title, The Vishnu Room, but a few months back when I saw the phrase ‘I’m not bossy, I’m the boss’ and became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign, I wished I could re-name the album, since indeed it can be tricky being a female boss and I think Sheryl [Sandberg]’s campaign is a terribly important one.  At the stage I became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign it was too late to change the album title because the sleeve was already in print. But last week, when the record company received the promo shots, which included the cover shot you now see, they asked could they change the planned cover to the current one, and that allowed me the opportunity of changing the title. Very happy girl." -Sinead O'Connor

GHOST Plans To Take Its Music 'One Step Further' With Next Studio Album:

"The songs are done, demo-wise. We know what it's going to sound like, what it's gonna look like, what it's gonna feel like, but we are yet to record it. We'll do that in the fall, probably in October or November sometime. So as for now, we've got most of the work done as far as the songs go. And the whole visual idea of the album…

As much as we took a different step from the first album to the second, we'll do the same now. There's a bit of everything in there. We are inspired from so many different things, so it's a blend of everything we want to sound like and what we like. But it's taking it one step further than we already did, so…. It's not necessarily… I wouldn't say it will be a copy of the two previous albums. We try to evolve all the time. Otherwise we wouldn't have fun, and hence there's no reason doing it. It's about having fun." -A Nameless Ghoul

OVERKILL - 'White Devil Armory' Release Dates Announced:

"White Devil Armory" will be released on July 22nd, 2014 via eOne Music.

4. Armorist
5. Down To The Bone
6. Bitter Pill
7. King Of The Rat Bastards
8. Another Day To Die
9. It's All Yours
10. In The Name

"The new record has a blend of what we've done over the past half decade. I'm noticing it's a more punchy heavy metal record with more dimension than the last record had. Where is it going to end up on the food chain? I really don't know. But my feeling is it's an eclectic collection of moments from us. 'The Electric Age' came across, to me, as kind of a two-dimensional thrash record. This one is punchy but has a whole different bunch of ways to go and things to hear on it." -Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth

Rogue Records America is looking to release PROJECT ROGUE – TITANS sometime in the fall on Digital, DIGIPAK CD, Limited Edition Vinyl and possibly even a DVD with studio interviews and more.

But it doesn’t stop there! Rogue Records America is also looking to release a free mobile app that contributors to the campaign can use to watch rare videos of the artists, both in candid interviews and performances, as well as early mixes of the music that they can even give feedback on.

'Raymond and I were talking one night, just throwing ideas around for the label…kinda like we always do,' said Dean Martinetti the Owner of Rogue Records America. 'He says to me, ‘ do you know what would be great? If we got a bunch of people we know and that I’ve worked with together and made a record for the label, and better yet…made it a crowd funded campaign to get the fans involved’….I couldn’t agree more.'

Martinetti adds, 'We want the fans to be as connected as they can be on this project, we really want them to be just as excited about this as we are and to connect even closer to the artists they love so much. Besides the mobile app we are thinking of YouTube streams, location visits for fans, etc. Every artist that has come on board…has done so because they want to have that connection with their fan base.'”

"We always wanted to go back and record these songs because later in our career we started to get more political and angry — that may have turned some people off but that's what we were feeling at the time.  In the back of our minds we knew we had these cool, old songs that were more life-affirming, it just took us 25 years to get back to it." -Jim Lindberg
